One thing I will say is I hate it when a movie (or in this case a TV show) is a big hit so they write some spinoff books. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc. They are awful and I have to suspect these books are just as bad.

 
Actually, it's a lot like the FFA. There's a crappy father, lots of drunks, lots of dudes talking about people's daughters, and the head honcho of it all has made a habit of killing everyone in the same family, which is sort of like Joe's relationship with Tanner's aliases.
