I am and always have been a huge Turner fan. He breaks tackles as well as anyone and is pretty elusive and fast for a RB his size. He was very impressive yesterday.
I still have to caution this was the Detroit Lions. There were holes galore. And when there weren't, they could not tackle him or anyone else. They have had this problem for years, but I doubt it has ever been as bad as yesterday. I know preseason doesn't mean anything (LOL @ 4-0), but the one thing they did well in preseason was tackle and fly to the ball. They did neither yesterday. And with a rookie QB, why on earth were there no blitzes? Goodness, do SOMETHING to confuse him.
The play calling was really bad at times. Late in the game, trailing big...why on earth do they run any play action? That is something anyone should know. Leave it to the Lions.
On the plus side (yes, there were a couple of positives), I thought Calvin looked phenomenal. He easily could have had a couple of TDs. They had to interfere to stop one and made one great play to stop another. I loved that he was targeted a lot. But I also wonder why he would EVER be on the sidelines inside the 5. Dumb. They would either leave him one on one (suicide), or double him and leave one less defender to stop the run.
All in all, Calvin looks like a beast and all Calvin owners should be excited about him.
Kevin Smith looked better than his numbers would indicate. Not great by any stretch, but he looked like a solid NFL RB. He still needs to improve on hitting the hole (the small holes when there are some). But he runs hard and looked great in the red zone. Right now, I don't see a reason for him to not get at least 70% of the carries. The run blocking is the problem anyways, but it was at least a little better than preseason. It takes time to learn a zone blocking scheme.
All in all, that game was a major disappointment for us Lion fans. I certainly did not expect it to be THAT bad.
It was nothing short of embarrassing.
