Game Thread W13 - San Francisco V Green Bay (1 Viewer)

Brian Billick is good at knowing football strategy, but someone needs to school him on the rules of the game. He seems to think that being inside the pocket is what you need to prevent intentional grounding, while it's obviously the opposite. By the way, I thought the time it was called wasn't intentional grounding because Rodgers was possibly outside the pocket and there was a receiver in the area, while I don't see how the second time wasn't called (unless it was a make-up call).

Billick also clearly doesn't understand the neutral zone infraction rule even though it's been around forever at this point. All the good you can say about everyone else on this broadcast team is that they aren't starting the stupidity (except for Myers' 1-yard gain call), but they sure aren't doing anything to stop it.

What's going on in this game? Why aren't the Packers destroying them?
Packers offense only was decent for about 50% of the halfSF Offense has moved the ball consistently V. Davis is the manPackers have dropped two INTSRefs blew two calls, once calling intentional grounding, the other blowing the play dead on a neutral zone infraction that shoujdl of been a 54 recpt to jones
Awesome. Thanks for the update. So the pack isn't in any danger, right?

would of been a 54 yard recpt to jones if the refs hadnt blown that whistle
Um, they blew that whistle correctly. A neutral zone infraction is just like a false start except the yardage goes against the defense.
that would be no.(re: Jennings td catch was made on the same type of play)The play is blown dead only if the defensive player has a a straight shot at the qb. Otherwise it is the "free play" qb's dream about.

so far it is looking like this will be the packers 5th loss, with the game ending on a niners field goal

I know this won't do fantasy teams any good, but Westbrook is doing a dynamite job in pass protection. He's picked up and handled GB blitzers all day.

Don't forget that the 49'ers have gone 4-2 the past few games after that awful 0-5 start. They are playing much better ball since Troy Smith took over as QB.

OK, let's start over. A play is always blown dead if an offensive player "false starts." Originally it didn't even matter if a defensive player was offsides if the offense false started; the penalty always went against the offense. Now they have adjusted the rules so that if a defensive player is offsides (or in the "neutral zone") when an offensive player false starts, the play will still be stopped, but the penalty will go against the defense; this is called a neutral zone infraction. This is exactly what happened during this game (half the line jumped when the 49er was offsides), and it's a pretty standard call.To sum things up, there are three ways that a play can be stopped when a player is offsides: 1. An offensive player false starts. If the defensive player is still offsides when the offensive player false starts, then this is a neutral zone infraction as described above. 2. The defensive player makes contact with an offensive player. This is called encroachment. 3. The defensive player has an unabated path to the quarterback. This is rarely called anymore because an offensive player will usually false start before the defensive player gets far enough into the offensive backfield. This is the way the rules have been for a decade now. If you doubt me, please check the rulebook which is helpfully linked in the pinned threads. If you still think that the officials erred in blowing the whistle, please choose a new team to cheer for.

Offense sucking and special teams sucks too.
Like I said. :grad:
I've lost count how many things you have said that were incorrect.
So long as you remember when we agree that the Packers' poor play at important venues of football play is all that matters.
I think they start slow in most game...they do play well at some important times..like the drive to tie last week and coming out today in the 2nd half. But special teams do suck.

And if they played better in those important times they might have won a few of those games they lost this year.

XOnly if the Defender is unabated to the QB should play be stopped.

Wow. Does the play not stop for a false start now?

Play is also blown dead if there is contact or the Oline jumps because of the guy in the neutral zone.
