Garage Door Guys (1 Viewer)

The other day I pulled in, hot the button and the door only opened half way. Then it stopped working. Figured the motor finally went, it is over 20 years old.

So I go to Home Depot, pick up a new one and install it yesterday. Follow all instructions, plug the power on and hit the switch. The door was already half open and it opened it the rest of the way

The trouble starts when I try to close it. The motor hums for 2 seconds or so and nothing happens. I have made sure the sensors are active and lit. The manual says that if the door is not balanced it might not close. How do you balance a door. Any other thing that I may be missing in trying to get the opener to work

Can you open and close it manually? Any binding along the path if so?

Just replaced one of our openers this weekend after the old one finally wore out. Gear stripped*. New one is SO much quieter...thinking about replacing the other old one.

*I might have added to the slightly early demise of the gear. Cable from bottom of door that wraps around the spring pulley broke. Replaced it with a vinyl wrapped cable. The vinyl caused a little drag, possibly enough to push the gear over the edge. Stripped off the vinyl and did a few other door repairs before installing the new opener.

No issues opening and closing it manually

There should be a couple tensioners screws (not the right word?) on the back of the opener that you can adjust. They adjust how much force it takes to open/close the door.

Not necessarily on the new ones. The only "adjustment" my new one has is up and down travel (distance). Force is pre-programmed.

Thanks Cliff. I think that has been replaced with electronic buttons. I have played with those to no avail. It is almost like the motor on the new one is broken even though I know it is not. Frustrating

I even thought that the outlet may be weak and tried a different one. Same issue

Maybe try re-installing with the door either fully open or closed?

Could it have auto-calibrated and been fouled up being half-way open?

Any error codes? I got a Genie and when I first went to test it out I hit the button and it moved a bit then stopped. Looked at the lights near the programming buttons and it was flashing red. I hadn't installed the safety sensors (yet) so it wouldn't budge.

Ill have to look in a little bit. Thanks for the idea

If you release the door from the opener does the opener move to the open and close positions when you press the button?

No, it doesnt move at all
If that's the case, it's not a door issue (binding/balance). So, door moves freely when released from opener and opener doesn't move when door is released. Something with the opener. Could be the sensors. Assuming you have power to the wall control (light lit) since you said the motor did hum a bit.

Ok, I guess I will try to trouble shoot. Everything is lit, The sensors as well as the wall control.
