Gas Pump Handle & Chapstick (1 Viewer)

For those unaware, a regular tube o' chapstick is a perfect wedge for holding the gas pump handle in the "full pump" position. In fact, just typed this while my stick does the dirty work. It's all about efficiency baby!

I just use the built in hands free thingy...You guys need to get with the times.
Yeah, I am not getting this. Perhaps 1% of the time, the pump latches don't work properly or have been removed.
What built in hands free thing ? The one on the handle itself? I have literally never had that option once in the 10 plus years I have been living in NY.

Oh NY. That explains a lot.

In MA those latches are all completely removed. Must be a state regulation or something.
I believe most states still allow consumers that little benefit. I am sure there have been some incidences of those thingies not working and gas overflowing and perhaps even catching fire which have driven those regulations.

Regardless of who pumps your gas, the American Petroleum Institute offers consumer refueling safety guidelines to prevent fires and accidents:

  • Turn off your vehicle engine. Put your vehicle in park and/or set the emergency brake. Disable or turn off any auxiliary sources of ignition such as a camper or trailer heater, cooking units, or pilot lights.

  • Do not smoke or light matches or lighters while refueling at the pump or when using gasoline anywhere else.

  • Some gasoline-hose nozzles have a latch to allow a continuous flow of gas. Use only that latch to prop open the nozzle handle. Never jam the nozzle handle open with any other object.

  • Do not re-enter your vehicle during refueling. If you can’t avoid re-entering your vehicle, discharge any static buildup BEFORE reaching for the nozzle by touching something metal -- such as the vehicle door -- with your bare hand, away from the nozzle.

  • In the unlikely event a static-caused fire occurs when refueling, leave the nozzle in the fill pipe and back away from the vehicle. Notify the station attendant immediately

Gas cap works as auto pump mechanism...saw in another thread a while back. They are banned in many states including Florida which is a very good thing IMO

So you think it is a good idea, but you circumvent the system and use objects which makes it far more dangerous.

You tell the lawman that when I'm packin' stick, there's gonna be trouble. :gang2:

Lot of them removed here in NC. People turn them on and then pump more than they want or it spills everywhere. Then they go in and whine to the bored minimum wage worker. So someone removes them so minimum wage worker can keep straightening the shelves or whatever rather than hear the whining.

The main reason that Oregon keeps its ban on Self-Serve gas is to create jobs. Some high qualifty jobs there.

Yeah...if it's anything like here in Jersey, that's about the only job most of those guys could get...they're slower than a sloth on a 10 degree day, until you get out of your car and act like you're going to pump it yourself. That's the only thing that gets them running. I honestly miss living in VA where I could pump it myself and be in and out of the station in under 5 minutes.

FWIW - when not in NJ, I use the gas cap when no other option is available...never had an issue with overflow as the pumps have auto shut-off.

Wow. Pretty bad when the entire state can't be trusted with something so simple. Speaks volumes.
Well at least they are allowed to pump their own gas. Great states like Oregon and NJ it is illegal for consumers to pump their own gas.
When that nutjob was lying in a trunk sniping people at gas stations around the DC area, I remember a lot of people thinking their states should ban self-service also.

Some people are never going to be more than manual labor. You'd be #####ing if they were on welfare as well.

Sure, but at least give them manual labor which is productive to society. They are about as productive as hiring people to dig ditches and fill them back it. Maybe we should outlaw remote controls and mandate only professional TV changers be allowed people to change TV channels.

For more than a few years working at the local gas station was no worse a job than waiting tables at the local cafe.

Yeah, just like banning going out to dinner, dropping your kids off at school and public bus stops. Actually, I don't think anyone thinking with just a tiny bit of logic was talking about banning any of these things.

They took these out in NY years ago.

Helpful tip, thanks OP

The auto-latches are all over Polk County.

You can also use a bic lighter to prop it up and hope it doesn't slip/spin out of place.

It's like playing Russian Roulette while you fill up.

That was when they were more "service stations" and they checked your oil and washed your windshield too. They actually performed a "service," and probably were somewhat mechanically inclined. I have no issue tipping a guy if he voluntarily washes my windshield these days. Frankly, I'd be completely confused if he checked my oil simply because nobody does that anymore. These days, I doubt half the guys who pump gas in NJ know much of anything about cars. All the old stations with garages just don't use the garage section anymore.

All true.

Is there any way do you think, with a little contortion, that it would be possible to prop the handle in the open position using your hand?

Sure, but I usually set the latch and do one of these while it's pumping:

- Go into the gas station and get whatever else I need

- Clean out some trash from the car

- Browse the internet on my phone

What is the argument against a simple latch again? I've never seen a tank spill over because of it. It stops due to a sensor either way, and you have to intentionally pump more to overfill it.

Several states have outlawed the latch due to some freak accidents, Some cases, mostly women, who go back in their car build up static, then go out and touch the handle and the static spark has started a fire. Sometimes the latch allows gas to run over.
