Even he is "cautiously optimistic" about how much he can do Sunday FYI. Sorry don't have link and feel free to ignore but FYI.

 
Hmm doesn't sound good. That's a tough injury. Sorry Gates owners, but I look for it to hamper him all year.

May be decent news for Chambers owners however. I'd venture a guess that his RZ looks will go up with Gates slowed.

A bit premature, but if Gates is slowed a bit, that also bodes well for yet more RZ work for LT.
 
Chambers should get his regardless, but if Gates' stats take a serious nosedive this year I believe it will be Vincent Jackson who stands the most to gain. Big, tight end-type of target in the RZ and his stats sparkled in last year's postseason when Gates was at less than 100%. Chambers' numbers also improved but not at the rate that VJax's did.

Answer

Some days it feels 100 percent, he says, and some days he doesn't know how he's going to run. That's normal, evidently. He looks great, but he sounds cautious. I think that's a product of this being his first severe injury. He has toughed it out and I think he's essentially full-go.

Also, you bring up an interesting point. It's my job to give info. And a by-product of that is that the other teams read it. If it were up to head coaches, there would be no media.

Sounds to me like Acee thinks Gates is playing it close to the vest but is ready to roll.

You're spot on. I can see where Vjax could easily lead the chargers in Receiving TDs this year if Gates remains limited. As a guy who targeting Vjax in multiple leagues I am very happy that he'll get increased targets. Overall as an NFL fan though I hope Gates makes it back to the field.
 
Antonio Gates won't start Chargers' opener

Despite practicing fully this week, Antonio Gates (foot) expects to be limited in the Chargers' regular season opener.

"I won't start the game, obviously, but (we're) just trying to monitor the situation," Gates said, "depending how it feels when I get out there. Sunday will definitely tell the tale and give me a clear picture of what I can do in the game." We'd still start him in fantasy leagues, but Gates may not see a full slate of snaps if his toe doesn't feel 100% Sunday morning. Sep. 4 - 5:16 pm et

Well, obviously, Antonio doesn't play on special teams...How can you not have this guy in your lineup if he is definitely going to play? He'll have a little "medicine" and be ready to go.

I've been hearing mixed reports regarding this situation. One day he feels great and the next it's sore. That seems pretty normal to me. Don't NFL players play with pain all the time?!

I don't see this as anything more than this being the first significant injury Antonio has ever had and he's a little skeptical about how well he can play on it. I guess we'll see.

go to chargers.com and you can listen to the interview on the right side in the "Multimedia" section. Those dolts from the local paper misquoted him. He says "Imma start the game obviously..." he says it at the 30 second mark.

As a Gates owner, I could be guilty of just putting the blinders on here but I just disagree. From everything I've read, the injury is done. It likely won't get worse by him playing on it (of course who REALLY knows the answer to that?). But he's been practicing fully and is expected to start. I'm not debating benching him until he is pulled from a game for the injury. At this point in his career, he's earned the benefit of the doubt in my book. Only after he burns me (entirely possible) I'll re-examine my option of giving Daniels the nod.

News: Chargers QB Philip Rivers, who's bounced back from offseason knee surgery, is looking forward to having both LaDainian Tomlinson and tight end Antonio Gates back in the lineup Week 1 against the Panthers. Gates injured his left big toe during a playoff win against Tennessee and later had surgery to repair a tear in the plantar plate. Gates, who did not play in the preseason, said he knew in July that he'd be able to play in the season opener.
