I've messed around with Ancestry.com in the past with free trial and finally decided to get a little more serious with it and signed up for 6 months of world explorer access. Also going to do the DNA thing but haven't gotten around to sending it in yet.

I was looking through some old records the other day and came across a census from 1871 in England. Check out the last column of data to the right:

What do you do if you are deaf but not dumb? Or dumb but not deaf? Did they just not care about counting those situations or did they assume that if you are deaf then you must be dumb, and vice versa? Or maybe "dumb" wasn't speechlessness in 1871 England?
