GIANTS GM TALKS TOUGH

RIPS PETITGOUT AS 'MARGINAL PLAYER'

By PAUL SCHWARTZ

July 26, 2007 -- Not many years ago, the Giants hit training camp determined to blunt the swirl of optimism surrounding a team characterized as a true contender loaded with talent.

That surely will not be the case tomorrow when players report to the University at Albany. The Giants aren't anyone's darlings.

Jerry Reese likes it better this way.

"I have things to prove," the first-year general manager told The Post. "The coach has something to prove. The quarterback has something to prove, as well as the running back. That gives you a little bit of an edge. A couple of years ago everyone was reading the press clippings. Now people are saying the Giants didn't do enough in the offseason. People are picking us probably third in the NFC East. That motivates me. That should motivate some people."

So devalued are the Giants in some circles there's a fairly widespread notion that Reese has set up head coach Tom Coughlin for failure with less-than-robust maneuverings in free agency since replacing Ernie Accorsi. Coughlin was not hired by Reese, and doesn't every GM want his own coach in place?

"That's insane," Reese shot back. "That's silly. I'll be very disappointed if we don't win, and win big."

Reese scoffed at the suggestion that left tackle is a major question mark heading into camp, insisting that at the very least, guard-turned-left tackle David Diehl will perform at least as effectively as long-time starter Luke Petitgout, whom Reese jettisoned soon after taking over (Petitgout signed with the Buccaneers). Reese also hasn't given up hope that Guy Whimper remains a left-tackle prospect.

"People are so worried about left tackle . . . I think that's so overrated," Reese said. "People act like Petitgout was the second coming. He never made the Pro Bowl, and I don't think he ever was a first alternate. Now all of a sudden he's the savior? That's ridiculous. I don't think we're that bad off without Luke Petitgout. He was not a star left tackle. He was a solid left tackle on some occasions and other times he wasn't. Luke has been a marginal player for a long time."

Tops on Reese's list of concerns is not left tackle, replacing RB Tiki Barber, or the continued development of QB Eli Manning.

"The secondary is the most glaring spot for me," Reese said.

As far as camp attendance, Reese said he's heard the rumblings that DE Michael Strahan is considering a holdout "ever since Michael and I had our first meeting when I first got hired as GM." Strahan, coming off a serious foot injury, is scheduled to make $4 million this season and $4 million in 2008. The Giants have absolutely no interest in giving the veteran defensive end more money, despite Strahan's plea that in today's inflated market he is underpaid.

"It's really kind of silly," Reese said. "How does that help him if he holds out? I expect Michael to be at camp."

Backup strong safety Jason Bell was placed on season-ending injured reserve with a back injury he aggravated during the offseason conditioning program. Earlier, FB Jim Finn (shoulder) was put on IR.

Well, this should be interesting going forward. At least there won't be any media people around him in New York when he shoots his mouth off . . . :lmao:

it's so easy to trash someone after they are gone . . .

he needs to keep his answers focused soley on his own team . . .

the real problem is that he has no one better than Pettigout to replace him . . .

This more I think about it a lot has to improve for the Giants to have a good year this year.

1) Eli has to improve

2) the line has to improve

3) the secondary has to improve

4) they have to overcome the loss of Tiki

5) more productivity from the wr position?

A lot of question marks without solid solutions besides maybe the RB situation and maybe wr.

You rarely hear a GM attack a guy unprovoked (at least to my knowledge) like that. The press puts heat on him for his lack of activity in the offseason so he tries to deflect it by trashing a former player. Pretty classless IMO.

I can't wait to hear him explain how the team doesn't need Strahan, how Barber is replaceable, and how Coughlin has the minds and spirits of every player behind him.

They don't need the Strahan they had last year. He did as much to hurt the team off the field as he did to help on the field. Really, out of the last three years Strahan has only had one year where anyone could argue he earned his salary. At the age of 36 by seasons end it's laughable he thinks he deserves more $. Reese was spot on there.

Does anyone disagree with what he said about Luke?
Well, I agree he didn't make the Pro Bowl, even a an alternate... but he is/was a heck of a player, and is far far far superior to anything the Giants have currently...

Petitgout wasn't a good LT... in fact, at times he was awful. I hoestly don't think that whatever player starts at LT for the Giants will be any worse than Pititgout was. I agree wih Reese's comments.... but also agree he should not have trashed the guy the way he did. One of the most over rated offensive lineman to come down the pike in a decade. That's why the Giants let him go, and I think Reese just got tired of defending the move.... and shot his mouth off. He wasn't wrong, but some things are better left unsaid.

I don't disagree much with this post at all. Reese has played the card where he doesn't speak all negatively about a former player and this is now months later and he finally said how he truly felt. I don't see too much wrong with what he said.In a thread on this board, I somehow missed Diehl playing LT yet saw the games. Turned out I wasn't the only one and a few of us didn't notice. While I can't believe I missed that, it does say something about both Diehl's play 'flling in" and Luke's. As a fillin, this G was as good as Luke. He's had all offseason to learn the LT spot in a bit more detail and Diehl could be pretty good there. Anyhow back to comments and Reese and all, Luke wanted to be paid well like all LTs and was there really any reason for Reese to give into those demands if he'd already been replaced? I think he did the right thing as GM then. Granted there's been plenty of time and he could have addressed depth of the O-line some but at the time, I think Reese made the right call.

I don't understand this comment re Pettigut esp from an Eagles fan. Ya see I'm figuring you could rattle off some stats like Cole burned him for 2 sacks etc for many many games and yet I'm taking this to mean you thought he was a pretty good LT. Maybe I'm misunderstanding ya

I love when the Giants are ripped apart by everyone. I don't think this team is so horrible and I'm confident they will be .500, it's finally Eli's show and we'll all get to see what he has in him. I just hope he lives up to his draft slot and the trade that the Giants made. I think another story is going to be about Jacobs who has a big chip on his shoulder proves all the skeptics wrong, the kid just plays with flat out passion.

This team doesn't need veteran leaders who are going to be complaining, Strahan can take a seat in the booth next to Tiki if he is going to be a distraction to this team. At 36 years old with three young capable DE's right behind him I wouldn't be so quick to talk about his spot on this team and the amount of money he needs.
