Tried doing a search and didn't turn up any results...

I'm trying to fix a wreck of a dynasty team and I am hurting at LB.

I was wondering if anyone knows who the starting MLB is for NYG and if you know of any deep deep deep sleepers (I am talking ambien overdose type deep sleepers) that could potentially wake up next year...

Jonathan Goff is most likely in house replacement but I do expect Giants to draft a rookie to compete.

 
I don't think they roll with a rook or that he's on the roster. Trade of FA signing. It's too key to their defense to just throw some rook out there. Too rare for a rook MLB to succeed too

Wilkinson will be in the mix.

A few days ago, Giants GM Jerry Reese indicated that the Giants might have a few overlooked internal candidates to fill the team’s gaping hole at middle linebacker.

Gerris Wilkinson is apparently one of them.

The oft-injured linebacker, who has played outside linebacker since he was drafted in 2006, said today that the Giants have indicated to him that he’ll be making the switch to middle linebacker this year. That puts him in the competition, along with Jonathan Goff and Chase Blackburn, to fill the hole created when the Giants cut Antonio Pierce.

Wilkinson, who will be 27 in a few weeks, said the Giants made their intentions known “through a third party” - - believed to be his agent - - and he is embracing the change.

“What I have in my mind is playing middle right now,” he said. “That’s what they’ve talked to me about playing. That’s what I want to play.”

Wilkinson was a starting middle linebacker at Georgia Tech before the Giants made him a third-round draft pick four years ago. He’s taken almost all of his practice snaps on the outside with the Giants, though he said he has occasionally filled in inside when needed.

It’s not clear how high up the depth chart Wilkinson will be, but it’s possible he could be a factor in the competition if he’s healthy. That, of course, is the big “if” since the 6-3, 231-pounder has played only 17 games the last two seasons and missed the second half of last season with an injured wrist

with the focus on DL in the land of giants over the years..MLB has sufferd especially when it comes to FF....Wilkerson IMO is the likley starter...i have also heard that they may go to a 3-4 this year....witch IMO..makes any ILB on the big blue even more of a non factor when it comes to FF..i would look elswhere...

I can't see Giants in a base 3-4. Whatever LB they draft hopefully it fits their scheme, last year Sintim didn't seem like a good fit. :bowtie:

I can't see Giants in a base 3-4. Whatever LB they draft hopefully it fits their scheme, last year Sintim didn't seem like a good fit. :shrug:

agree about the 3-4...however..i am a Giants Fan..and ther have been rumors

 
Larry, that totally sounds like "we've gotta have a bandaid around here somewhere".

Chase makes me cringe as the MLB. Too many yuck performances were followed by complimentary quotes by Giants coaches.

I hope the Giants address the MLB position with a FA out there or trade.

Also, Coughlin is very wary of starting rookies. Im sure Goff has a very good shot, 60%. Wilkinson, Blackburn, rookie are the dark horses

I'm beginning to warm up to Goff as a solid sleeper, could he be a 3 down MLB available for next to nothing? The Dillard guy they brought in to compete, supposedly (Bloom post draft 100) isnt worth much in coverage.

Mixed reveiws about his coverage. From the scouting reports I've read, he should be fine in coverage. One scouting source said he is athletic and loose-hipped to turn and carry backs and TE down the field, also shows awareness in coverage. Another said... solid athlete who can run downfield in coverage and will break up passes.. Obviously Goff has the edge on experience, I believe its his job to lose.

 
From what I've read and heard on Big Blue Interactive.com, the new Def. coach's schemes funneled plays to the WLB rather than the MLB like most schemes. For the Giants, Boley is the WLB and should get the most opportunities if the coach doesn't change his scheme.

That's mostly correct. There's a lot more on the Tampa-2 and the role of the WLB in the link in my sig if you're interested. The MLB is still important, however, and it's more that the WLB gets increased opportunities than the MLB gets pushed aside. Not that the Giants have that kind of player on their roster, but MLBs like Brian Urlacher, Gary Brackett, Barrett Ruud, Shelton Quarles, London Fletcher, etc have all had nice statistical seasons in this scheme.

Jene (and others), here is more of a theoretical question prompted by the above posts.Wouldn't it be far too disruptive to a DC from a play-calling standpoint to have an MLB in a 4-3 who didn't play all three downs? Not just the physical challenges of the headset and all but also leadership, training in calling plays, etc.

Only in the traditional sense. The MLB has always been the conductor of the defense, in a position to see everything from the middle of the field, get everyone aligned properly and call defensive audibles if needed. Times change, however, and there are more and more teams whose defensive leader is a secondary player or OLB. More and more teams are using an ILB base-subpackage platoon, too. The headset issues can be worked around pretty easily and putting the best players on the field will usually smooth over any perceived leadership issues. I think the traditional every-down MLB as the captain of the defense may be still considered ideal, but I don't think the alternatives are a major liability.

Excellent. Thanks.It just seems that whomever they ultimately decide upon will probably mix mediocre talent with above average tackle oppty (being MLB in 4-3). Assuming (a) that choice actually sticks in the lineup and (b) plays every-down, it would make their ultimate FF point value comparable to, say a low-end MLB like Stewart Bradley or Nick Barnett just by having a pulse every week, no?

Just trying to support a sleeper case. Used the same logic to draft Bradley in the last round of a redraft 2 yrs ago when he was installed in Philly but maybe that was a blind squirrel situation if he had better talent than the guys in the mix for the Giants' job.

It will be interesting.

Playing in the run-n-shoot Big 12, NEB HC Bo Pelini basically switched to a 4-2-5. Thrid & long was a 4-1-6. Dillard manned the middle on all downs & given the impossible to run against DL, teams through A LOT.

That said, I do recall watching the LBs at the combine & seeing him fall in a backpedal change of direction drill. I thought, Ugghhh, that's not good. Tight hips.

When he came beck from the coach's doghouse, we started at WILL next to a rFR MIKE. He called all the defenses & changes from the WILL.

We'll see. I hope he succeeds. I think the FB IQ is really high. I think he had great coaching (Pelini being a former GB Packers LB coach). I think he'll absorb the playbook quicker than many rookies. Just have to wait & see if he's got more physical tools than he showed at the combine.

 
Rotoworld) Jonathan Goff is opening eyes at Giants OTAs, according to ESPN's Len Pasquarelli. Analysis: Goff has apparently been running with the first team in all of the offseason workouts even though the Giants say it's an open competition at the middle linebacker spot. Still, Goff didn't exactly knock anyone's socks off when he started four of the final five games last year, so we're not handing him the job yet. It's not a great spot for IDP production anyway.

 
I noticed a big dropoff in goff's #s in latest projections....Did something happen that I missed?

Goff will communicate with defensive coaches upstairs, a sign that he will stay on the field in some obvious passing situations. The first-year starter has plenty of job security heading into the season.

 
What does "in some obvious passing situations" mean? If he's wearing the helmet isn't he out there on every passing situation?

hippyk's question never got answered and the latest 3 down LB posting shows the Giants as having no 3 down LBs. How does this mesh with Goff wearing the helmet with the green sticker?

Does anybody know how he looked on Sunday? He had 8 tackles, which sounds a whole lot better than the 2 he had in week one. How many plays was he in for against IND?

Did not watch the game - but I heard the Giants were in a 4-1-6 defense most of the night, with Goff as the primary LB - which certainly helped with the numbers. I would wait for some more consistency before starting him in an IDP league.

from the bits of the game I saw, Boley was wearing the green dot. I also noticed him on the field more than Goff. Of course I missed chunks of the game

Having both Boley and Goff, I paid pretty close attention to the game. Boley was the LB in on all 3 downs when they went with the 4-1-6. Deon Grant was up on the line of scrimmage next to Boley in this set.
 
Had a hard time staying up for the game, was not able to keep a good eye on it. What I recall Giants opened in dime with Boley as only LB. I beleive they had Deon Grant playing up in the box. Colts finally ran them out of dime and Giants went to nickel with Boley and Goff.
