Gio Bernard ... Dynasty Buy? (1 Viewer)

With the recent emergence of Jeremy Hill as the primary ball carrier in Cincy, would Gio be considered a "Buy" candidate in dynasty formats??

I noticed that the recent FBG Dynasty Rankings still have Gio within the top 10. As a result, he could be considered a buy low since he was also a consensus top 2 draft pick.

The main reason I ask is because in my 14 team dynasty league, the current Gio owner is looking to sell for a late 1st round pick. I find it intriguing considering I am on the rebuild, with a poor RB stable. (I do have 2 1st round picks)

There has been rumours on a strong 2015 RB class, so is it worth trading a late 1st for Gio in lieu of one of these RB prospects?

I apologize if this is not in the proper forum.

IMHO it seems like a RBBC with Gio being the lesser. Until I see differently, I am not buying. I do own him in a dynasty league and I might try and trade him to someone that is more optimistic about his future.

I think it is fair value giving up pick 10-14 for Bernard but the short to long term prospects for him may be very good.

As others have mentioned you are looking at a long term time share situation with Hill and Bernard right now which limits the upside for both players unless one of them is either injured or otherwise benched.

Hill seems to be the favorite of the coaching staff right now so if that continues Bernard may only be playable when Hill is out or against a difficult opponent where the Bengals are forced to pass more.

The coaching staff is possibly in question of being replaced and if that happens the new coaching staff might go a completely different direction with the offense than what they currently have. The new offense could possibly feature Bernard or Hill more or they might be looking for "their guy". There is no way of really knowing what will happen this offseason or next on that front. So this adds more uncertainty to the situation than what it already is. Because of that and the possibility that Hill maintains the lead RB role for awhile, I think you may want some more insurance in a trade that covers this possibility.

What I mean by insurance is a 3rd round pick or long term player prospect that you would be willing to hold for awhile to see what happens. Given the uncertainty and recent events I think asking for an additional 3 round pick or similarly valued package is what I would be looking for in return on top of Bernard for a 1st round pick.

As far as the 2015 draft, yes there are several very good RB prospects available for the upcoming season. I expect the 2015 draft to be more RB heavy in the top 6 picks than it was last season. There are some good WR as well but not as many as there were in 2014. So the chances that a quality RB prospect slips to pick 10 seems unlikely to me.

If you are in rebuilding mode (as indicated in the OP) I do not think RB is the position you should be looking to shore up. I think you should try to get your team well stocked at WR/QB/TE first and once you have a quality stable of players there then look to add your last RB pieces to compete for a title. If you try to do that with RB before building the core of your team at other positions you may become more competitive but not have the WR to maintain that level of competition for very long.
