Girl at my office told me to... (1 Viewer)

According to the vast knowledge of these inter webs:

The phrase cotton picking arose in the southern U.S. states sometime during the 1700s and was used to describe something that was unpleasant or troublesome. Back then, cotton was a garden crop tended by white as well as black Southerners and the cotton was turned into cloth for home use in much the same that flax was turned into cloth for home use in the North.

Cotton-picking became part of the vernacular in the U.S. and in time, it was the phrase swapped in for unacceptable comments such as God-damn or damn when in polite society or if women were present.

The verdict: Cotton pickin minute is not a racial slur but calling someone a cotton picker could be considered an insult.

Wait a cotton picking minute this afternoon. She seemed surprised when I told her I didn't think that was an appropriate thing to say.
Tell her that "Wait a blueberry picking minute" or " Wait a thimbleberry picking minute" is considered more northernly and less racist and is considered by most to be more racially acceptable.

So, to be clear, when my white grandfather that picked cotton in his dad's fields throughout his youth says it, should I be offended?

I wasn't offended, I just told her I didn't think it was appropriate for an office setting. Personally, I don't care but I have a feeling she could find herself in trouble with HR. Perhaps I'm wrong.

She hot? Black?
More dirty than hot, lots of tattoos and white. She is completely off the reservation, heads out at lunch a good 2-3 times a week and gets wasted. She has a Adderall prescription and sells the pills to the bartenders in the area so she has enough money to booze all the time.

You're in. Go wreck that sloppy, dirty chlamydia laden clam.
Yeah we need a good Friday story. Missing Az Ron keeping our interest peeked.

Out of curiosity, what part of the country are we talking about here?

Let's all just call a spade a spade here. It's something that is not heard often so it's odd to hear.
The origin of that saying predates the use of spade as a derogatory word by many centuries. So the saying has no racial history, but is avoided in our politically correct society.

I'm not touching her but she supposedly fooled around with our Dominican front desk girl at last year's Christmas party.

Yeah, I guess I could see that being received differently there than in my neck of the woods. You probably gave her sound advice, but I'd say 99 out of 100 times there's no racial intent to the saying.

I never picked cotton.

But I took a few paraquat mistings while flagging for my cotton crop-dusting uncle back in the day. Never really bothered me, except that cigarettes tasted kind of funny while patrolling the caliche roads.

You are. Not a slur.

OH COMEON.
Sounds like a slur about Indians and their drinking problems. Highly offensive, to the feather not dot.

Ordering fried chicken or collard greens or watermelon or orange soda isn't exclusive to blacks/slavery either, but go order all those next time you go out and see what kinds of looks you get.

Never heard of this phrase. There could be a lot of picking moments in CA but cotton isn't one of them- or is it ain't..
