Give me the best defensive team you could possibly field (1 Viewer)

Ozzie Smith, Brooks Robinson and Roberto Clemente were the only ones I didn't even have to think twice about. The rest are open to debate. I stil go with Maddux and my SP and I'll take Hoffman as my RP in a tight call over Rivera.

So -

C - Yadier Molina (I'd go with Bench or Pudge if I needed the offense)

1B - Bill Terry is an excellent call here (maybe Pujols in the modern era = or even JT Snow if you don't need offense)

2B - Frankie Frisch (Robbie Alomar more recent)

3B - Brooks Robinson

SS - Ozzie Smith

LF - toss up between Yaz and Stan Musial

CF -Torii Hunter

RF - Roberto Clemente

SP - Maddux (one game only I'd take my chances with Gibson or Koufax)

RP - Hoffman (slightly over Rivera)

C - Bench

1B - Hernandez

2B - Maz

SS - Ozzie

3B - Brooks

LF - Bonds

CF - Mays

RF - Clemente

P - Maddux

Kaline had 16 more RF assists over his career than Clemente, with a about 4/5 the chances. Kaline was the slightly better player but these two players had eerily similar careers. They played at the same time, Clemente had 3000 hits and Kaline 3007. Clemente's OPS+ was 130 for his career, Kaline's was 134. Kaline hit more homers and stole more bases, Clemente had a higher average. Career WARS have Kaline 28th, Clemente 38th. Kaline's range factor a touch higher as a RF, but they are almost identical numbers.

Never really thought about it before and not sure why since both were so good for so long.

Clemente had 100 more OF assists but 70 more OF errors than Kaline

Good catch, I was looking at the wrong column (in fact I was looking at errors). I was wondering, Clemente had a legendary arm and while Kaline's was terrific, I never thought it would be as good as Clemente's. And it wasn't. Still, these players are pretty damn even overall and in many key stats and metrics.

SP - Pedro Martinez

C - Johnny Bench

1B - Don Mattingly

2B - Roberto Alomar

3B - Brooks Robinson

SS - Ozzie Smith

LF - Barry Bonds

CF - Willie Mays

RF - Roberto Clemente

DH - Frank Thomas

RP - Mariano Rivera

Where does Brendan Ryan rank, and does his superior defense make up for a career 242/305/324 batting stats?

He is really good out on the diamond; he does everything A+. But he looks like a pitcher when he's standing at the plate.

Don Money might be up there at 3B. Other than that, I don't see many of these lists being different from what I would put out.
