Going dynasty: what do I need to know? (1 Viewer)

Would really like to take a league or two of mine the dynasty route. We have 80-90 core maintainence over the last 5-10 years with occasional swap in and outs.

What are the keys to maintaining a dynasty league? What do you do when a member leaves? What do you do year in/year out, strict rookie/FA draft or do you protect a core of guys? Has anyone had a league implode?

We have a strict rookie/FA draft just before the season with draft rounds based on how many players you drop. You can protect your whole team. When players have left the league we give everyone who still left in the league an opportunity to take over that team if they want and then we shop for an owner; if the team is particularly bad we might have to make some concessions. Expanding the league creates some problems on how many you players you can protect or lose overall. I think that you are really going to like dynasty after a couple of years. We happen to have small roster and limited trades but I think limits the rebuilding efforts. Not the most informative post, sorry.

Keep this dynasty commissioner's lessons learned the hard way in regards to starting and maintaining a dynasty league: Start with a group of owners with a common thread. Get experienced dynasty owners or at least owners that love football who follow it year round. Keep the money in the commissioner's hands. Have a plan in place to replace exiting owners. Do not define tanking. Let it be ambiguous enough that it is enforceable when you need it. Refer everything to the rules and do not get caught up in fixing other owner's lineup issues or owners will believe it is the commissioner's job.

I just wrote an article about my dynasty league after 5 years imploding at www.dynastyblitz.com http://dynastyblitz.com/2011/12/02/the-demise-of-a-dynasty-league/.

I have not played dynasty, but have considered for a while and have a few thoughts. Anakin brought up a few key ones (start small...league size 10-12), and get $$ upfront. I also have read the boards for years and IMP, the teams in the league that turnover, seem to be the same darn ones. Owner takes it over, finds it is too daunting of a task for the $$, abandons it, and you start over. I would be curious what people think about giving the owner of a new team a one year discount. If the buy-in is $200 per year, make it $100 that first year. Typically, the teams that get abandoned are bottom half, if not bottom, and while some may think it is fun to build a team over the years when Jerricho Cotchery is your #1 WR (and you have no first rounders for two years), the fact of the matter is, the person who took the team over is at a major disadvantage compared to those who got to draft in the beginning. It may take them 4 years (or $800) to get to a draft worthy team, and even then, they likely will be out of the playoffs. There are certainly exceptions, but I think it makes sense to throw the guy a bone and make the obvious understood that he is starting from the bottom.

I think that having small rosters allow you to rebuild quicker because it leaves a lot of talent on the waiver wires. Parity is the key even if it has to be forced, to an extent. Teams out of the playoffs need to be drafting first, thereby limiting trading of picks you can assure that these teams at least get to a spot that these picks have value for them. In a good dynasty there is no reason that you should have to have more than one year to rebuild and in most cases you should be able to be competitive every year. FF knowledge is exposed in a dynasty, so the guys in your league that are poor FF players to begin with are not going to do so well. In dynasty the rich get richer surely so it is imperative that the weaker teams interests get looked after; what that entails is up to your league. I would also say don't over think this; it is easier than it looks.
