Going Kickerless in the first week (or two) (1 Viewer)

I've seen people sweat through a coule of days w/o a kicker only to drop a potentially good player for a fill in spot.

I usually don't draft kickers and don't start them either until a few weeks in, unless I've got F*all on my roster. Is this common?

I do like the idea of doing it all year long but that's kind of silly....

Doesn't make any sense to me

Do you have an unusually small roster?

Can a kicker lose points for you in your scoring system?

Unless your bench is incredibly small, I can't imagine that this is a winning strategy. A last-round kicker will easily provide you an average of 6 points per game; the expected value of a last-round flier has to be much lower than that.

Sounds like poor strategy to me unless your league scoring really has some weird coring system. The kicking position is generally of low value because there is not much of a difference between a top kicker and a middle ranked kicker but not because they don't get any points. I think taking a zero from the kicker spot would be terrible strategy in most scoring formats.

our league penalizes a team -20 points for not starting a K or a D
That's even more dumber than willingly not starting a K.I did go a week without a D, once though. It was a 16 team league. Really none on the WW, and mine was on bye, and only averaging like 5 PPG, anyway.

I understand it if your PK is on a bye, maybe you hope for the best that week rather than waive someone to pickup a bye week fill-in.

WARNING - Slight Hijack

What are the reasons that some leagues will not allow a person to not start a PK? (Or another position for that matter?)

There is a big difference from having a kicker on a bye week, and not having another one to start for one week, then not having a kicker period.

same here...you have to submit a rull roster. If you submit an illegal roster (i.e. someone on a bye week or known to be injured) you lose all points for that week and your head to head match-up. You also get a $25 fine.

I don't even like to go kickerless when my kicker is on bye, so I carry an extra kicker just for that (who I drop as soon as my primary kicker's bye is passed). We have limited roster moves, so I don't have the option of burning a free agent pick to pick up a kicker for bye week. However, it makes it easier on me when I can drop the extra picker for a free agent skill position later in the year.

I'm in a league which scores FG's & Missed FG's as +/- 0.1 per yard, and XP's are +/-1. I've seen negative scoring from kickers fairly often there - maybe 10% of the time, and I would still always start a kicker.

I don't like the idea of spotting my opponent a half dozen points every week. I could see not picking one up during the bye week if you have good matchups and a weak opponent but that's about it. Going without a kicker for a few weeks sounds like you're asking for an 0-2 start unless you're leaguemates are a bunch of clueless knobs. Even clueless knobs can sometimes draft a decent enough team to beat someone with as stupid of a strategy as not drafting a kicker.

Beats me...
Code:
They are commie leagues, run by people who want to control how others run their teams. Same as leagues that have mins/maxes on how many players at each position one can have.

In my league, that would be an incomplete starting lineup and you would get 0 points for the week...

If an owner is not setting his lineup, there is a stronger case for a commish to be able to do something about it if it's an actual rule violation than if the rules don't require it. It's often an issue when an owner goes awol and some teams face a valid lineup when he was active, and others may face players on bye, resulting in unequal competition across the league when they faced that team.Requiring a complete starting lineup also makes it a little more difficult to tank. Some people will try to do anything the rules don't expressly forbid. This won't necessarily stop someone from trying to tank by starting their scrubs, but it does stop them from just not submitting a lineup, or leaving out a few players, without having violated a rule. (Though a no-tanking rule is better in the long run for stopping this).

Those are the only concrete benefits I can come up with. However, I think there is also a spirit of competition that many people believe in that intentionally not starting a full lineup violates. And that is probably the bigger reason rules like this are created.

In any league I am in that is a roster spot and you have to finish the draft with a full roster and as mentioned earlier why waste 5-10pts some kickers could help you win. not smart to leave an open slot

Our league requires you carry two kickers and two defenses. Makes no sense to allow people to try to hoard all the long shot running backs in hopes that one may pan out.
