Going to Key West (1 Viewer)

Ministry of Pain

After going back and forth between this and a cruise, we opted to stay on land and go to Key West to celebrate. I have never been, wife has been once or twice I think. Here is what I have planned so far.

Accommodations: We opted to stay at a B&B type of setting. Most nice hotels down there charge upwards of $300-$400 per night, especially on the weekends, we are going down there this Friday. Went with a nice fully equipped kitchen, king bed, living room, private back patio(2nd floor) with a jacuzzi, this seemed like a good plan for us. My wife has become Mrs Healthy so the full kitchen helps because we can take some of our food down with us. I do plan on dining out at least once at a nice place.

Restaurants: Need the FFA advice for anything here. Quality trumps everything for me eating wise. I already know most places will be somewhat pricey because it's Key West. We would enjoy a top notch seafood place down there, already bringing some top end ribeyes with us to cook(BBQ) down there.

Events: Planning on going snorkeling. Hopefully I won't be mistaken for a manatee in the water. Looks like a company named Fury seems to have a lot. We are thinking of parasailing, jet ski maybe, Fury actually has a floating rock climbing type thing where you slide down the other side in the water...this is actually out a few miles from shore I believe, sounds like fun.

Anything you all can think of would be awesome.

Be nice

What's called Sloppy Joe's isn't Sloppy Joe's. Hemingway's Sloppy Joe's is Captain Tony's. Likeable place, but sadly Capt. Tony semi-recently passed away.

Haven't snorkled out of KW, but there are lots of places along A1A that will take you out to the reef.

Restaurants change down there so often that my notebook's way out of date. I believe that the Crack'd Conch, several Keys up from KW but worth the drive, closed recently. Which is a shame - the place had killer food.

I highly recommend Seven Fish for dinner. Not far from the heart of Duval.

As for snorkling, we just went to the booth at the marina there next to the Conch Republic...had about a 1.5 hour snorkle...a 4 ft shark and a barracuda both swam right by me.

Rent a bike and wear plenty of performance tees if you have them!

Performance T's? I think I have these...standard black adidas polyester top?

I just went with my wife, lots of food recommendations for you. Our favorites on Key West were this place for fish and this place for Cuban.

But if you're driving down, my #1 restaurant recommendation by far is this place in Marathon. It's well worth stopping on your way down and on your way back. Best fish sandwiches I've ever had. The strongest recommendation I can give- I've watched Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives for years, and this is the first place I've ever felt compelled to email them about. Can't recommend it enough.

For snorkeling, look into the day trip to Dry Tortugas if you've got a full day to dedicate to it. Boat ride is about 90 minutes or more each way.

Yes...maybe this early won't be too humid, but we were there last in July, and it was like an oven (and I grew up in Tampa).Didn't bother me...I have a bunch of syn tees...but some of the girls were looking for performance garments also, for a different area of the body.

Snorkeling : Not happening from shore in Key West. Go on a chartered trip to the Dry Tortugas.

Restaurants : Mangia, Mangia for Italian, BO's Fish Wagon for (very) casual seafood, Half Shell Raw Bar for raw bar stuff, A & B Lobster House or Alonzo's Oyster Bar for $$ seafood.

Bars : Happy Hour - go to the Bight. Alonzo's, Conch Republic Seafood Co, Schooner Wharf, Half Shell, Turtle Kraals, Finnegan's Wake, Dante's Key West, White Tarpon, Chart Room at the Pier House - lots of places have killer happy hour deals. After 8 - Duval St.

Beaches - Smathers is the best, but Southernmost and Higgs are also nice and typically less crowded (but don't have the amenities of Smathers - one restaurant in each place and that's it, Duval Beach Club at the former and Salute! at the latter)

If you search the most recent Key West thread, I have other stuff on there. Have fun, avoid the oil.

Listen to this guy. Anyone who recommends BO's (expecially given its outward appearance) knows what he's talking about.

Kelly's is one of my favorite restaurants in KW.. (near the end of Whitehead Street downtown).. There is another great place on the southern end of Simonton St called Camilles.. If you want real fancy and real $$$$$ try Louie's Backyard, or save some cash and just have a drink at Louie's Bar called the Afterdeck..

You MUST have breakfast at the Blue Heaven on Thomas St in Bahama Village.. great atmosphere and lobster omlettes..

Schooner Wharf, Turtle Kralls (huge raw bar if you are into that) and Green Parrot (near the Hemmingway House) are my favorite bars, and of course Captain Tony's. Met the Captain a few times.. he asked my wife if she wanted to marry him.. very nice guy, will be missed, and Capt Tonys will never be the same :potkettle: for me..

The bars on Duval are usually more expensive and most crowded (same with eats), but if you must, there is an Irish Bar that always is a good time..

B&O fishwagon is a neat place for lunch- great fish sandwiches.. there is a great Cuban place (casual- VERY casual) place near the Southernmost Point in Old Town..

Smathers Beach is the largest in KW, but I prefered to go to Fort Zachary State Park, because of the snorkeling.. if you wnat serious snorkeling, catch one of the many many catamarrans out to the reef.. stunning snorkeling at the reef..

my advice here is fly into Fort Lauderdale and drive ..(take Card Sound Road off US 1 and stop at Alabama Jacks right before the Card sound Bridge- bring your bug spray though) and then head down US 1 through the Keys.. the drive is alot of fun and scenic..

I thought MOP was in the Tampa area? If so, the Key West Express from Ft Myers is really easy.

We're driving down Friday. There is an airport in Key West but we live in Miami and it should be a nice 3-4 hour scenic drive all the way down. We are stopping at a place called Bahia Mar or something like that on the way down. If you flew, I would imagine you fly into Ft Laud/Miami and catch a shuttle plane or small plane down to the Keys the rest of the way.

My wife is going to love me. All these great restaurant ideas, Tobias, EG, everyone else, good stuff. Love the dive places that actually have great seafood. I find it tastes better in shack like atmospheres for some reason.

I used to live in Tampa for whoever was asking. One of my favorite "joints" in Tampa is Skipper's SMiokehouse. The food to me is pretty tasty and they always have good live bands playing out there.

 How come you nixed the cruise idea? Just curious. I recently started working for a cruise line down here in Miami and would be interested in knowing what your thought process was for deciding on the Keys over a cruise.

Hey SS,Several things. We looked into cruises and found some cheap deals thru Carnival but that just isn't a cruise line that my wife and I would enjoy. So we looked into Celebrity and we found a really nice ship. Was gonna run somewhere around $1,000-$1,200 for each of us for a week. We started thinking about things and we wanted to be somewhere we could be more active and also be in more control of the food we eat. I know the ships have some good food but we really are picky.

In Key West we are getting a private deck and jacuzzi, to me that was a major plus. We are still going to go out on some boats down there, not the same as a cruise ship but people get on my (expletive) nerves really fast. We can all agree on that so I thought being stuck on a ship for a week with 2,000 of my closest friends was just a bit much right now.

Our trip to the Keys is gonna cost probably half of that and we'll probably eat better. Even on the ship, they wanted more money if we ate in any of the nice restaurants on the ship. SOme were $25-$50 pp on top of what we initially paid...that didn't sit so well with us so we opted to go to the Keys and stay within the safe borders of the goold ole United States. Spend our money here at home.

B.O.'s Fishwagon is DEFINITELY for you, then.

I plan on writing up a play by play but let me just 1st of all thank Tobias, Parrothead, and EvilGrin who had the best palces to eat in Key West.

Loved BOs

Loved Key Fisheries-Had the HogFish and that was awesome.

EG had the hook ups on the happy hours. From 4-6:30 everyday Alonzo's has about the best happy hour you can find. Left side fo the menu which includes peel and eat shrimp, oysters, clams, lots of appetizers, all half price off the menu. It sits i a very nice locale a little away from Duval Street. Lot of locals around which immediatley means you are at the right places.

Turtle Kraawl which is owned by ALonzo's is also really good, great grilled wings. Love grilled wings with good hot sauce, good BBQ.

Tobias knows his food, I'm a big FunkeFan for the forseeable future. EG also lead me to Finnegan's Wake which has a 2nd happy hour from 12-2 everyday so we made sure to go there at night while we were out.

So much to post about but I just got in, wanted to thank the board for all the suggestions, had an absolute blast and want to go back soon.

Never been, but sure seems like a place I would like... someone told me there arent really beaches/swimming in Key West? True?

Key West does not have incredible beaches...HOWEVER, Bahia Honda which is up the road about 35 miles, just South of the 7 mile bridge was one of the highlights on our trip down. We stopped in there and explored for the full afternoon before we drove the rest of the way and checked in. The beach at Bahia Honda is not like South Beach in Miami but it was secluded and really nice. Our little condo/B&B was like something out of a story, blew me away.

Does that mean you're going to start listening to Dave Ramsey today being that you probably spent a buttload of money on the trip? :blackdot:

Glad I could help. I cook a lot, I love seafood and divey places, and I was just there with my wife like a month ago. So I was a particularly good source for this one. I can't promise similar results in the future.

This is the best place to "chair" in the Keys....period. Only bad thing about it is the secret is out :lmao:

:lmao: sounds like a great trip.. I miss Key West and am planning on returning next year.. Glad you found Bahia Honda.. great place to spend a day!!Next trip, you can take in Big Pine Key (look for the Key deer), and if you can find it, the No Name Bar on No Name Key is worth a visit just to say you were there (it is pretty remote), plus, they have great fish sandwiches.. Did you eat at the Blue Heaven?

and pizza

What do you mean you and your wife are picky? i.e. chicken tenders every night? or just on an organic/natural kick?

Glad you had a good time, MOP. When I was down last month, we hit 13 bars during Happy Hour one day, between 4:00-8:00. 17 drinks during that time span, made for an interesting night (especially considering we hit Rick's for $10 all-you-can-drink wells and domestics until 11:30 right afterward.)

I took a sea-plane there when I was younger on a family trip. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget. Just being in the plane was cool because you could see tons of sharks and turtles from overhead. Funny how everyone thinks beach / fishing when they think of KW but it's really just Duvall St. The other Keys are where you go to fish / dive. I've seen the Jesus statue off of Key Largo and that was cool too.
