Past Weekend Update...
-We drove down form Miami, left Friday Morn about 6 AM, made it to the Last Chance Saloon by 7, drove down leisurely and made it to Bahia Honda which is MM 37 by 9 AM. We set up an umbrella and chairs, maybe 10-12 people on the entire beach when we got there. Stayed for about 4-5 hours, when things started getting hot we left to do lunch but the weather was perfect. 85-88 degrees, no rain, humidity relatively mild, light breeze off the ocean, doesn't get any better.
-Went to Keys Fisheries for lunch, MM 46ish, was good but they seem to have a lot of rules now and a bar/staff that is not as pleasant. We loved the food but we made it to a couple other places I am going to highlight.
-Checked in to our BnB on mile marker 27 on RamRod Key. The place had a full size pool, hot tub, gorgeous grounds with a hydroponic garden, bikes for us to grab, BBQ-gas, we stayed in a camper on the backside of the property, very private, queen bed, kitchen, private outdoor shower was nice, and we paid $75 a night. The BnB owners said it usually rents for $100-$125 a night but there was a last minute vacancy. They rent a room inside the house for about $150 a night, very nice amenities and we will be on their short list of last minute guests when they have anything close to that price again. More likely to get it in the summer as that is the off season.
-Sat we were gonna snork but instead we just explored around there. We ate a place called the Wharf around MM 25.5, excellent fish, even better than Keys. Another place called the Square Grouper we did not make it to. We got drunk with the BnB owners and got to hear about their travels including the nudist colonies they frequent. We opted to stay clothed but I have a feeling if you want to sunbathe at the pool nude, there would have been no issue.
-Sun we went to a local swim spot you can't see form the Hwy but we decided to go on the owners advice that there was some snorkel to be had right there. What they did is channel out thru the coral and then never built the homes, there was a car down in the 15 foot channel and you could stand up on either side all the way out to the Gulf. People just drove up, parked, there was nothing around there but suddenly you got 30-40 people parked with coolers of beer and then kids swimming int he water, we ended up going from just a quick drive by to staying 2.5 hours. Met a nice lady who is an avid football fan(Miami Dolphins) and owner of a 22 foot boat and no one to go out with her to split some of the gas costs. Wife and I told her we would get her to a Phins game if she took us out on the water. We made a new friend.
-Ended up getting a recommendation for Salty's which is right at the North side of the 7 mile bridge, Gulf side if that helps as well. Did not look like much but they had a very short menu and some items or plates not on the menu. Bartender/waitress knew the person who sent us there and she asked if she could just make a couple of fisherman plates for my wife and I. We ended up getting mahi, shrimp, and clams plus 2 fries n slaw(both excellent) for $12.95, could not beat it. PBR on tap for $1.75, we had a ball.
Stayed away from Key West, did nothing for 3 days. Feel very refreshed. Not going to let another 3 years go by between visits. We're thinking about once a month during the summer.
