My son's high school choir is singing at Carnegie Hall next month and I am going yo be in NYC for 4 days. Bringing my gf along and was wondering if staying in mid-town is the best place to stay.

Also, would like to check out some of the city, but don't want to go yo anything that's overrated or has an insane waiting time. What to those of you who have been there suggest?

I will be there in late July for several days.....

ETA: And if anyone knows a cheap place to park a car for a couple weeks.....

That is a 78 page thread....guess I better start reading. Seems like its mire for people who live there sharing memories.
No that's not what I meant. Just ask your questions in there. This guys visit that's right all the time and are very helpful. You'll get answers that are really useful.

ask what you want to know in there and/or read back a few pages- this thead gets covered every month or so in there.

"sharing memories"

in my day, frankfurters cost a nickel!

Id check out the Mandarin Oriental. Decent hotel in a central location. Definitely hit Per Se with the fam for nice meal. Great place for groups.

There are parking apps you can download and use along with your GPS and it'll show you where the cheapest parking spots are.

On a hotel, try calling magellanvacations.com and speaking to a representative. They're very helpful and sometimes, in the right dates, you can get an absolute steal.

Alabama?
Figures. Seems like if I drive I will spend $300 just to park. ugh.
Wanna park on LI and take a 45 min train?
His best bet is probably to get a hotel someplace like Secaucus that has free parking and then just take a bus 15 minutes into Grand Central.

That might be very cool. Cheapest flights to Europe were from JFK and am planning a trip there, so I booked flights from JFK figuring I could find a cheap flight to NYC and I could spend several days in the city. Right now flights from Indy to JFK are over $400 (x 2) for the dates I want which seem high, so I am considering driving the 11 hours to save $600. But if parking chews up $300 it is hardly worth the driving time. Hopefully, I can find a cheap flight over the next few months so it won't be an issue, but I am surprised the flights cost that much.

I assume Secaucus is safer than Newark? Would they allow parking for a couple weeks if you only stayed there a few nights?

Secaucus near the train station (15 minute ride) is $29 for 24 hour parking. Midtown West, i.e., west of 10th Ave, will run you $30 for 24 hour parking. 10 minute walk to Times Square.

Mandarin Oriental is a must if you're a Russian oligarch. With not much effort you can find perfectly serviceable business class hotels for 1/3-1/2 the cost. Keep in mind budget hotels aren't really that cheap and add considerable travel time due to walking.

The New York thread will offer lots of useful answers if you post your questions there.

park it at my office here in Lyndhurst,NJ. everyone here does it when they go on vacation. bus line to the city is right outside.the main line is a short walk away.hotels nearby.good restaurants.cheaper than staying in Manhattan, and you can get there within 15 mins by taking the bus.

Thanks! If it comes to that, I will PM you for the addy.

what are the prices for long term parking at the airports? have to figure it's not so bad... plus, easy transportation in to the city.

Airport Parking is $18 a day. Probably get charged for 16 days, so about $288. I think there might be off Airport parking for about $10, which is more reasonable.

fwiw- a gb just spent a weekend at the W Hoboken (no idea of the price- his wife's company paid) and had a very easy time getting back and forth to the city on the PATH trains.

I've got this travel blog (though sorely in need of updating) that's got some neat NYC ideas for things to see and do that don't cost a thing, but make for interesting stops for those interested in history or pop culture.

www.trivialtraveler.com

- The last standing remnants of the Polo Grounds

- The site of Malcolm X's murder

- The building used for exterior shots on Night Court

- The street in Greenwich Village that intersects with itself

Stuff like that. I've got little articles about sites all over the country that lend themselves to Cliff Clavin - type trivia, but it's admittedly got more on NYC than anywhere else.

Apologies for the shameless self-promotion. Seriously though, it's good. Check it out.

Unlikely, but at least for your stay, they would. I did it a few years back, I had 2-3 days between business trips and decided to stay around NYC< but I was saddled with a rental car and didn't want to pay $50 a day to park it, so I got a room at a Hilton Garden Inn (I think ) in Secaucus that offered free parking and just took the NJ Transit bus into midtown. Only took about 15 minutes. It's definitely not the ideal NYC experience, but I think the room was around $125 a night and it was a very decent hotel. Between that and the free parking, I had to have saved anywhere from $500-$1,000 over staying at a hotel in the city over 3 nights. That kind of savings enables you to get two pastrami sandwiches instead of one at Katz's.

Hoboken is a great town on its own. If I had my choice of anywhere to stay just outside of NYC with price being no object, that's where I'd be.
