Google Fiber - Game-Changer for Cablecoms. ISPs (1 Viewer)

So I just switched from Comcast Cable to DirecTV. Internet as a part of the TV bundle for 30/10 was $39.99. When you drop TV, the rate "increases" to $75.00 a month for the same speed tier. $64.99 for 20/4, and $49.99 for 6/2. I can't wait for the day when this level of competition from Google is throughout the US.

Still made the switch, and never looking back.

They would not be in Austin if they didn't have plans to serve Dell.
That's my thinking.
I think they care a lot more about the SXSW stuff and the startup tech companies like the one they bought recently in Austin then they do about Dell.

I'm in the same boat out in RR and pretty pissed they have announced no plans to work there yet, but i just don't see Dell as being the oh let's get them connected that google is looking for.

I disagree. With Dell going private I imagine they are going to push even more in to the services business, which could mean reselling/promoting Google's business solutions including internet. And while you are right that there are other tech startups in the area, they don't have near the footprint of the employee base of Dell and companies like AMD that likely have a lot of people who don't live in Austin proper on the payroll. What's a better business decision - making a company like Tableau and their 75 employees feel special or engaging 8,000 dell employees who spend their day talking with potential google customers?

Not necessarily offices, but employees. You've got an army of tech savvy folks connected to other tech savvy folks all over the world. What better army of evangelists could Google hope for.Damn, Abe, jinx

Google announced that Fiber would be coming to my suburb just outside KC in early May of 2013. Still waiting for signups. Once signups are available probably another year before getting the service. So from the time it was announced, it will be 3.5 - 4 years before I'll actually have the service live in my home. Interestingly, AT&T is building into my neighborhood with Gigapower, so I have a choice to make soon. Drop TWC for AT&T now or wait for Google.

Any estimates on how long it will be before this is rolled out to all major metros in the US?
10 years.
never
still on target
Going to Salt Lake City. Pretty exciting. Not that most of us will ever see it in our lifetime.
From the link it says they also announced Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, RDU in January. At this pace it should be rolled out to all major metro cities in a couple of months.

Not Google but signs went up in my neighborhood for AT&T Gigapower this morning. They launched in other parts of Greensboro in July and looks like they'll be in my neighborhood soon.

Didn't see a thread on thishttps://fiber.google.com/plans/residential/Seemslike big news but I hadn't heard anything about it until today. Was this just released? Looks pretty cool. That's the pricing link - more info herehttp://fiber.google.com/about/
Can't believe it's been 3 years and they've only expanded to a few cities and then only parts of those cities. I'll be ready to retire by the time this gets to my neighborhood.
