Gospel Music (1 Viewer)

I LOVE Gospel music! I do not mean Christian music, especially white Christian music, which I personally find really dull. I am referring to African-American church music, rich in tradition and at the root of rythym and blues, with strong keyboards, amazing vocals, and incredible emotional power. I'm hoping somebody can recommend more of it to me. "Bridge over Troubled Water" is a classic gospel song- hopefully, that will explain the sort of thing I'm looking for.

Here is a list of simply incredible performers in this genre I have listed to of late:

Mavis Staples

Mabel John

Irma Thomas

Marian Williams

Sam Cooke

Mahalia Jackson

Aretha Franklin

Claude Jeter

What you got?

Art Garfunkel was not African-American, Tim.

Here's how I would look: go to www.pandora.com and set up a gospel music radio station. There are options for buying the album on line of you like it.

It's been many years since I've listened to the gospel hour on KSYM's Third Coast Music Network show, Thursday's at 5:00 p.m., but looking at the playlists posted online I see it's still going. Here's a link to last week's playlist. It will take some work, but if you scroll down to the bottom and click the archives link and root out Thursdays past, you'll be a connoisseur within a couple of hours. TCMN Playlist

ETA: driving me nuts that I cannot recall name of Los Angeles gospel choir featured in documentary (Sundance channel?) I watched a few years ago. Finale song was quite good (understatement).
