Last full season was 2008: 101-33-90-38-.268 with an .876 OPS

Tailed off considerably in 2009 due to various injuries, and was awful in 2010 before his season ended with microfracture knee surgery. All of the reports have been positive about his recovery, hitting all of his timetables, etc. But it's still microfracture surgery, something we don't see very often (ever?) with baseball players.

It would seem to me that his speed will be pretty sapped at least in his first year back, but on the flipside he's 28 years old and should be right smack in the middle of his prime. He's very intriguing in that he doesn't have to make a 100% recovery in order to still be an elite OF because he was already so good before. Of course, it just takes one owner to overhype a guy and inflate his ADP or auction bid beyond the point of what you should be reasonably comfortable with. So what does everyone think of him for 2011?

Depends on format - I'm all over him in h2h but roto? I'll pass unless I have a deep bench/DL. I wouldn't plan on starting him for at least a month while he gets his legs back under him, he didn't even start baseball activities until January.

Regardless, don't penalize him for what he did before his 2010 ended - doctor screwed up his surgery, blame Grady's agent for forcing him to change doctors.

Looking at the NBA, a lot of players never return to pre-surgery form following microfracture surgery. All things considered his ceiling for SBs can't be more than about 20. You also can't project a high BA as that has never been a strength for him. Assuming his power returns you've got a player who's about average (for fantasy) in speed, power, and BA. And it's tough to anticipate Runs or RBIs as a strength for him either considering the Cleveland lineup.

He'll be coming off fantasy benches in all but the deepest leagues. Generally I like my bench players to be strong in particular areas so that when I put them in I have a good idea of what to expect from them. A beaten up Grady doesn't fit that mold.

That's pretty pessimistic but I agree it's probably smarter to underpay for him this year. He's a good late round gamble in the unlikely event someone else doesn't reach for him, because he'll probably be a middle of the lineup guy in Cleveland. He's also more valuable in OBP leagues.

Agreed, didn't mean to suggest he just outright sucked last year. There were certainly reasons for his offensive demise. I'm really torn. On the one hand, I want to remember that he was a first round pick and superstar just entering his prime and challenging for 40-40 seasons just two years ago. But on the other hand, I am having a tough time finding a guy who overcame as serious a surgery as this and returned to be the same player. I also have this fear that he's the new Darin Erstad and just beat up his body too much as a young man. What kind of numbers are people expecting from him? I'll toss out 85-25-80-10-.265 which are somewhat useful but nowhere near previous levels obviously. If things break perfectly for him and he's really recovered, I would imagine at age 28 and with his talent background that he can get as high as 95-30-90-20-.280...but that seems like a pipe dream to expect a 100% recovery in year one.

Different sport but Amare Stoudemire is the poster child for microfracture

Doctor Detroit's MAIN TARGET in last year's keeper auction.
You are forgetting to tell everyone that in that league where you can keep guys up to five years with just a $5 increase in years three and five, he was probably the best hitter available. Considering someone dropped Adrian Gonzalez after the first year of a $29 deal, I'm expecting to win this league in my third year.

Taking this year off again then?

Given the rules designed specifically to keep me down in year one, I'm expecting a middle of the pack finish. So pretty much like all your fantasy teams, regardless of sport.
