"The next time a coach says that he doesn’t pay attention to the individual numbers of his players, roll your eyes. (If you weren’t already.)

With Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski and Saints tight end Jimmy Graham entering the day at 1,219 and 1,213 yards, respectively, both were gunning for Kellen Winslow’s single-season record of 1,290.

And they both got there, in unusual fashion.

Graham first set the record. Then, Gronkowski passed him, after Graham and other New Orleans offensive starters had been removed from the route over the Panthers.

So Saints coach Sean Payton put Graham back in, and Graham took the record back from Gronkowski.

And then Pats coach Bill Belichick put Gronkowski back in late, giving him the final record on a 22-yard catch that preceded three straight kneel downs by quarterback Brian Hoyer to end the game.

Gronkowski finished with 108 yards, and Graham had 97. For the season, Gronkowski ends with 1,327 and Graham petered out at 1,310.

Along the way, a 31-year-old record changed hands four times........."

Hmmmmm, my first inclination is to think this is a bit reckless, but I am neither a player or a coach and probably a bit overly cautious by nature anyway.

Thoughts?

Payton also fed the ball to Sproles in the second half, as he was in the hunt for the "total combined yards" record. Then he took him out immediately after breaking the record. It's all good unless someone gets hurt. But if I were the player I'd want to be in there going for the record.

I see no problem with this. These guys did every thing asked of them for their teams all year. Everything was already decided so then its fair game to go for some personal achievements

This.Helps keeps players playing hard for a coach.

Rodgers could have broken the td record today but the Pack wanrted to give Flynn a showcase game. Different strokes I guess.

How come anytime somebody talks about some player or team earning a recognition of some kind, some Packer fan has to step in and say "Yeah but the Packers.... blah blah blah".Enough already with this crap.

Ummm, that is a huge leap. You can't just assume Rodgers gets 6 TDs, when he has never done that before in his career. The entire game is different. Maybe Kuhn gets a rushing TD. As Shady said, GB was helping Flynn out. It was a meaningless game for them and to be honest, if they aren't showcasing Flynn and throwing a ton, maybe guys like Nelson and Finley aren't even playing. To be honest, I was really surprised that Nelson was out there. With Jennings getting hurt, he is going to be a little rusty and maybe not 100%, so why risk what is now your #1 WR.

I love every part of this, and Payton and Belichick. Im not a Saints fan but I respect that team more than any other in the NFC.

Welker 2009 had his knee shreaded in a meaningless game...all fun and games until someone gets hurt I think he had 123 catches in like 13 games that year
