Greatest college WR you ever saw (1 Viewer)

Mine is Anthony Carter - U of Michigan

When I was a kid ( 10 - 12 ) he was my all time favorite player - I loved watching Michigan just to watch him play and I grew up an ND fan.. He didn't translate well to the NFL due to lack of ideal size - He did have that 1 great playoff game against Frisco in the 80's to knock them out.

After him yeah you guessed it BMW - maybe the best freshman WR ever or at least I recall hearing about. Had a great soph season as well. Unreal catches.

Carter was amazing. I remember being so excited to watch him play in Michigan stadium.Torry Holt was a close second.

Larry Fitzgerald was unstoppable his Sophomore year. 92/1672/22

Michael Crabtree had video game type numbers in 2007. 134/1962/22

:goodposting: him , Des Howard , Braylon Edwards ...loved the WRs Michigan produced ....kinda why it hurts to see the new offense in Ann Arbor

Randy Moss, follwed closely by Rocket Ismail and Peter Warrick.Cakvin Johnson wasnt too bad either.
Rocket did his legacy no favors but saying goodbye to American football and heading to the CFL for those years. I wonder what kind of numbers he could have put up in the NFL....

In person Michael Irvin...

Please say in person or not, find it hard to believe someone seen in person Randy Moss, Rocket Ismail, Cakvin Johnson and Peter Warrick all in college.

In person? I saw Fitzgerald at the Insight Bowl vs. Oregon St back in the early part of the decade. Another guy I saw vs Ariz St., who was just too small for the NFL was Troy Walters from Stanford.

Charles Rogers
:lmao: He was one of those that you watched the game if you didn't care and hoped they threw him the pass just to see him make a play. What a complete waste of talent.Moss was similar but since he didn't play against top comptetition, you couldn't appreciate the skills as much at the time.

There is no doubt that the most dominant WR ever in college was Randy Moss. In saying that however we must also realize he did it at a 1AA school vs. inferior competition (not that the guys in 1A wouldn't have been inferior as well). I don't think Moss would have had any problems dominating in 1A football either but he didn't play there. Bobby Bowden said Moss was the most talented player he ever saw when he came to FSU after leaving ND for disciplinary reasons and that he was immediately the best player on their team (a team that already had Warrick who others have mentioned). He had to let him go because of his 3 strike rule however (though Moss only got 1 strike in reality).

For 1A football I'd say Larry Fitzgerld was the most dominant that I've seen. Living in Pittsburgh I got to see a lot of it up close and personal as well. I really don't know why Fitz didn't get more hype coming out of Pitt, maybe because Pitt wasn't really that good. I once read that Fitz was the only player ever to receive a perfect grade by one NFL scout who graded a game he was at. Fitz was lights out at Pitt.

Cris Carter dominated when at Ohio State...

....and if he didn't play in D-2, Jerry Rice would be the best no question about it!

Honorable Mention....

Keyshawn Johnson

...also Alworth and Swann from footage I seen looked to be good as well.

Moss college stats:
Code:
Season Team GP REC YDS AVG TD LNG 1996 MAR 15 78 1709 21.9 28 1997 MAR 13 96 1820 19.0 26 90T Total 2 years 28 174 3529 20.3 54 90T
Rice didn't put up better numbers than this outside receptions and did it vs. even worse competition.

You probably remember this
moment...

I remember thinking at the time that Charles Rogers was one of the most polished college WRs I had ever seen and a an absolutely can not miss.

I've always said that Peter Warrick was the most dynamic receiver I've ever seen. If Moss would have stayed at FSU, that opinion might be different, but they are 2 different types of receivers. Don't forget that team also had Laverneus Coles before he was dismissed as well. I've always wondered how many more Championships my Noles would have won if that threesome would have stayed together.

The best overall receiver I've seen in college is Fitz, no question.

Here is one snippet on Moss coming out of high school and in college:
Former Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz said "Randy Moss was the best high school football player I've ever seen."[8] Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden said "He was as good as Deion Sanders. Deion's my measuring stick for athletic ability, and this kid was just a bigger Deion."
Same ability as Deion only bigger. Simply terrifying!

Funny I saw it the same way... Plax and Rogers being 'cut from the same mold'... Rogers made better catches--he had unbelievable hands... Plax was better YAC (going from memory and my impression of them).Still--the best WR I saw in college in person was Andre "Bad Moon" Rison... I remember when he got the ball close to the endzone there was no stopping him (despite his size)... he carried/dragged 2 defensive backs into the endzone one time at the end of a deep pass.... they were ripping his jersey off him and he wouldn't stop till he got the ball over the stripe. And he'd lay out for a catch--it was amazing. At the end of the game--if MSU was behind--you knew the ball was going to Andre deep (usually in the middle of the field)--and so did the other team.. and they couldn't stop it. He was awesome.

These are the two I was gonna go with. I lived in Pitt and had the pleasure to watch Fitz play. He was unbelievable and unstoppable. You knew he was something special just watching him.And I didn't get to see Crabtree personally, but I watched some of those games. They knew the ball was going to him and to still put up those kind of number were insane. He didn't blow me away physically like Fitz did, but the numbers he put up were incredible.

:goodposting: First player that came to mind before opening the thread.

Randy Moss made me, a kid growing up in suburban NJ, a Marshall Thundering Herd fan, so I'll have to go with him. I remember seeing

and being in awe of how good he was. This clip is pretty good too.

I'd agree with BMW (Mike Williams from SC).

From the one handed catch he made against Oregon St. to the strait punk of the UCLA DB. He was a man amongst boys; just absolutely dominating.

First person I thought of was Randy Moss...although he was a man among boys playing for Marshall.

Others that immediately come to mind:

Desmond Howard

Peter Warrick

Calvin Johnson

Mike X. Williams

I also remember Terry Glenn making a spectacular catch almost every game for Ohio State.

I never saw him in person, but watching on TV it was Randy Moss. Guy was ridiculous in college. Made Marshall's first year in D-1A a successful one almost singlehandedly. I read a stat once that he scored at least one TD in every college game he played. Crazy to think that's even possible against any level of competition.
