Greatest Punk Rock Album Ever? (1 Viewer)

Here is a local band. Older guys that have been around since the earlier days but just formed i. The past few years. Reminds me of west coast late 70's punk (Germs, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys.

They do very good punk rock.

LOVE Quicksand. I used to go see them every time they came around and then saw them unexpectedly opening for deftones in the late 90s when I didn't even know they had reformed. Single best concert surprise of my life.

Im not sure I can put into words why I think its the best album. I like Rancid, Im not a huge fan. In fact, Pennywise and Bad Religion might be 1 and 2 in my favorite punk band list. But that Wolves album hit a nerve with me. Not a bad song on it. Catchy has hell. I know Sebowski blames Lars, but Lars was on Lets go, no?

He mostly sang backup and added guitar. Those songs were written without him, Tim and Matt are gods. Lars is a leach. Let's Go doesn't have a skipable song on it. Wolves is at least a third skipable. I loved the first two so much that I might have set myself up for disappointment with Wolves. I literally told my 17 year old self that there was no way they could match Let's Go, so I was going to enjoy whatever they did as best i could. Than they blasted Maxwell's Murder and I thought "####! They did it! They can do it!" Then it was off and on with a lot more off than unfair me for the next, what, almost two decades? Just my opinion...

they aren't. and neither are the MC5,nor the amboy dukes. they were garage rock bands in metro Detroit, Detroit isn't a punk scene it was more of a garage rock style

I, too, think Quicksand was fantastic. Not mind-blowing, but just so, so damn solid. That's not usually a genre up my alley, but they were doing some funky stuff, like having Don Was produce Manic Compression (IIRC), which is a wildly underrated rock record. Everything Walter Schreifels did for a long time turned to gold when it came to music.

 
I will say that rancid was part of some of the best concerts I've seen! Once in Mexico it was sublime, rancid, penny wise and the offspring. I also saw them with pennywise and sprung monkey in SD at a surf movie premier.

That Age of Quarrel was insane to me as I was getting heavy into hardcore. Really loved it

Cro Mags, Skinhead, breakout

But if I had to pick my favorite hardcore album, it might have to be Underdogs Vanishing Point with this song leading the way. Cant tell you how many times I practiced singing this song practicing my hardcore front man moves

I always liked the New York hardcore bands.

Murphy's Law self titled is another good one.

Saw them live in the 80s, a girl walked on stage and the lead singer Jimmy Gestapo ripped her shirt right off.

I've seen them on both ends. Seems to depend on the level of :banned: happening.

Saying the Stooges aren't punk is like saying Sabbath isn't metal. Not only are they punk, they are as responsible for inventing punk as anybody else.

Would it be pedantic to point out the term "punk" came from Lenny Kaye in the original Nuggets comp, of which the Amboy Dukes were a part of (or at least a part of the later box set)? That was, um, garage. He used the term "punk" in that sense.

And I get what BSS is saying, but it's not worth the fight all around, IMO. The Stooges. Great band. Punk, Proto-punk, whatever. Fun House actually turned my friend onto punk because he walked into my stoney room as a twenty year old and said "what a groove." I think it was Loose or T.V. Eye.

eta* Come to think of it, that album deserves mention here. Whatever one thinks of Jack White, he wrote an excellent foreword to the re-release of Fun House basically calling it one of his favorites ever. That should raise antennae.

Changing my pick to the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack. Barry Gibb's in your face guitar line and angry lyrics ("No time to talk!") are classics of the genre.

Glad there is love for Never Mind the Bollocks. Freshman year of college, that LP was on constant play and I was considered quite the rebel for listening to such anarchist music.

don't get me wrong. No Control blew may socks off in 10th (?) grade. Still love it for nostalgia reasons. They've made some fun records. But if we're throwing out Shart Pool disses, "one of the best bands ever in any genre" is like the "Jerry Rice is not a HOF'er thread". There's no possible way I could come up with an argument to even debate that side of the issue.

Remember in the '90s when Sonic Youth and others were pumping the Carpenters in a weird sort of hipster irony that flourished into the regalia that were '90s trucker hats and ringer tees and culminated in allowing Sonic Youth to call itself punk?

I remember it well...to this day, still not sure what punk is. L7 punk? I will say, I loved L7 back then ..."Can I Run", poignant & relevant, then & now...so many good songs..."Broomstick" & "American Society"...Donita Sparks live was something to experience...(not saying I have good taste, just saying)

If you think all of their albums sound identical, I suppose you wouldn't. I just disagree, but I don't feel the need to make an argument for it. Music is subjective - if I think they're one of the best, then they are as far as I'm concerned. I control what gets played on my radios/stereos/devices, no one else. I don't expect anyone to agree with me, if you do, great. I was just a little surprised that they were being dumped on in a punk thread when they're legends in the genre and (IMO) have been a huge help in elevating punk beyond the public (mis)conception of its fan base being comprised solely of a bunch of Mohawk-wearing hooligans with Foster's oil cans and Doc Maartens kicking the snot out of someone in an alley.

Those guys have polished their sound and mastered melody and harmony in their music while still carrying an edge both musically and (especially) lyrically. I don't know if I've ever played a BR record for someone and didn't convert him/her into a fan. Just felt like they deserved some respect.

 
I think Drastic Actions was a formative song of mine (no suicide) and that Suffer was a great album, FWIW. I never liked BR until I sat down with Suffer and really listened to it during a CA vacation once. Awesome stuff. Just really good.

It could be a regional and intellectual (that he's too hyper-intellectual and uses those themes, is what I mean) thing, the dislike of Bad Religion. I have a lot of respect for them, they're just not my cup of tea. But I won't forget my stupid walkman and Suffer. Good times.
