Chiefs | Wesley may be traded

Sun, 22 Apr 2007 12:56:06 -0700

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports the Kansas City Chiefs have offered S Greg Wesley to teams in order to acquire more draft picks.

He's been playing FS past 2 seasons, more of a SS type. Wesley is 29 years old, should have fuel left in the tank, has nice size and is a big hitter. Just a few years removed from being considered one of the better IDP defensive backs. Could be a nice IDP producer for a few years ... if he lands in right situation and plays the SS role which he is be better suited for. Keep an eye on where he lands.

3 Greg Wesley (below). A seven-year starting safety, Wesley is as unhappy with his situation as Johnson is with his. He is, for now at least, a backup to Jarrad Page and Bernard Pollard and would like a trade.

The Chiefs have a willing trade partner for Wesley in the Denver Broncos. The teams have agreed on terms of draft-choice compensation, but the Chiefs have yet to sign off on the deal in fear of sending him to a division rival.

In most cases, that’s reason enough not to make a deal. In this case, it’s not. Page and Pollard don’t need Wesley’s looming presence. The Chiefs have capable safety reserves in Jon McGraw and Chad Williams and will probably release Wesley and his $2.7 million base salary, anyway.

In that case, the Broncos would get him for nothing.

A year later ... but I still think he can play, and be fairly productive. His salary and refusal to take a pay cut, will hinder. If he wants out, he better be more flexable on the financial end.

He asked out last year, and the Chiefs almost had a deal in place with Denver for a fourth-round draft pick. The Chiefs, not wanting to send him to an AFC West rival, backed out right before the trade was made.

They later could have sent him to Houston for a seventh-round choice, but that deal was scrapped when Wesley wouldn’t agree to take a pay cut.

The Chiefs declined to respond to questions about Wesley other than to say they would try to exhaust all possibilities to trade him.

Wesley wants Chiefs to let him go
