Hackett or Jacoby? (1 Viewer)

DJ Hackett or Jacoby Jones. Both are listed as great "sleepers" this year and it seems like JJ is getting more hype love than Hack. I like Hackett's QB situation a little more but he has Burleson and Engram to worry about. As for JJ, it's pretty much AJ and him right? (I know K.Walters is there).

Who would you guys take a flier on this year and what are your expectations? Thanks guys!

Hackett = Guranteed Points (How many ??? Dunno but he will get at least a catch or two a game, could have big games)

Jacoby = High Risk Gamble for the same Upside as Hackett (May not catch a single ball in a game)

We know Hackett will, at worst, split time at flanker for a proven offensive unit with a Pro Bowl caliber passer and a very good coach. Jacoby is a promising rookie who MIGHT have a role as the WR2/WR3, but his value as a return man is also going to eat into his offensive reps. Even if Schaub plays up to expectations, I don't see him approximating what Hasselbeck will do, and then there are the uncertainties about what kind of coaching/scheme they really have going in Houston.

I think Hackett, all things being equal, is the much smarter play (if you're talking about the same draft spot/round).

Hackett. I anticipate him earning the #2 WR role ahead of Burleson.

I do like Jacoby Jones as a WR4/WR5 with potential high upside that could land him in the Top 30 WR's year end. Most likely not, but worth taking a shot late in the draft.

First off, I think this is an odd comaprison based on ADP's as I'm aware of them. When would you be faced with an either/or proposition on these two WR's? I like Hacket, but with an ADP of 103, that is half the ADP of 206 FBG's has for Jacoby Jones. I know Jacoby has been pimped to the extreme lately, but his ADP still isn't '103' high. I have selected Jacoby in two competitive drafts this week in the round 15 range...well after Hackett was drafted. Bottom line, I don't think Jacoby will be drafted higher than anyones WR6, but he sure has nice upside. Honestly, in most start 3WR leagues, you are hoping you don't really ever NEED to go to the bench for your WR6, you are happy taking a nice 'lottery ticket' shot in the late rounds on a guy who could supplant your current WR3 (not likely), or starts off strong enough to become viable trade bait. Cause a WR6 that is never used, and stays on the bench all year doesn't maximize roster space value IMO. Trading that WR6 eventually (if he hits 'the jackpot') can get you value. It is not too often you can get a 'playmaker' at WR6 that late in the draft. I like this comment on Jacoby by Kubiak:

“He’s fearless. He’s a playmaker, and you know, we’ve got something special right there. We just need to keep him going. But boy, is he a good football player.” - coach Gary Kubiak on Jacoby Jones.

Considering the 4 special team/reception TD's he has pulled down the last 3 pre-season games. I'll take that gamble at half the cost of Hackett.

There is about zero chance that Hackett splits time at flanker. Branch is the flanker this year (position switch in offseason). This has been discussed by the team on a number of occasions and is rock solid.

Burleson has looked very good in the preseason. I've bumped Hackett significantly down my list. I think it many have grossly underestimated Burleson, because he was playing with broken fingers or broken something last year in his first year on the team. It's been said many times but not fully grasped, that WRs who switch offenses tend to suffer in their first year. And now that Burleson is catching the ball, he looks every bit of a capable WR2 in that offense. If anything, he has earned himself playing time, and Hackett is not going to bump Deion Branch out of the #1 there. I look at Hackett as a WRBC on his own team, especially with Engram entrenched at WR#3, and nowhere he is nowhere near deserving of where he is going in drafts right now.

Branch appears to be the guy you want to own in Seattle now. It's gonna take a real early pick to do it though. Personally, I'll avoid of take Burleson real late.

Jacoby Jones looks like he could be poised to be the next great rookie WR. My interest in him went down when the Houston coaches stated that Walter was entrenched as WR2, but what Jacoby has done this preseason is undeniable. Should have seen that coming after the Senior Bowl huh? I think at this point, he is going to win the WR2 sooner rather than later, and has some decent upside in a surprising Houston offense. I would love to grab this guy as a late round pickup in a redraft.

Actually, I'd categorize it more like this:Hackett - ADP is much higher (lower round) and his downside might be steeper due to that, but he's a better bet to produce consistently, as Woodrow points out, he's going to split time in a starting role so he's more likely to be a consistent fantasy performer, but with a higher price to pay in your draft.Jacoby Jones - LOW risk gamble with POTENTIAL and high upside given his speed, size and how quickly he seems to have adapted to the NFL level of play. That said, he is far less of a sure thing given that a) he is a rookie and b) he has no assurance of a starting job at this point. He does, however, look like the team's #3 WR at worst and I can't imagine him now surpassng Kevin Walter for a starting job at some point this year. That said, I'd have lower expectations for Jones than Hackett, but given that his ADP is drastically lower and it'll cost you less to draft him, his upside is something to keep your eyes on in the 2nd half of your league's draft.

Thank you!! It's always nice to see someone sprinkle in some actual facts around here!

You're welcome. Most of the staff here don't really understand what's going on with Seattle's receiver situation right now. There have been some major changes that will affect Branch, Burleson and Hackett, but they are largely ignored around here. Some people are going to be surprised.

 Surprised Wood said that. I think Shick spread the Hackett love to all of the staff, unfortunately.
