This HAS to be the start of something they have in the works. Hopefully, this will get NFLN to those of us who are forced to keep TWC!!

Read the story more carefully. NFL Network is offering it to Time Warner but TW does not have to accept it. When HBO or SHowtime offers a freeview weekend to gain interest in thier network, the cable and satelite companies essentially "unblock" the channels for those customers that are not paying for them. The situation with Time Warner is much different. TW does not even offer it NFLN as a premium channel. If they chose to take NFL up on their offer (which I doubt they will) they would have to designate a channel number to it. One of the channels that is currently unused would then need to be created so it is not like they are just unblocking the channel for everyone to see it.

I doubt TW will bite on this because it will only help the NFL Network gain more interest from the subscribers that can not get it. Does TW really want all of its customers to start watching NFLN for a week and really like what they see only to have it taken away after 7 days? Like they don't already get enough hate mail and people calling them complaining they can not get that channel.

Smart on the NFL's part to try to get the people motivated enough to complain loud enough to make the cable company cave or to make the people switch to saterlite that does carry NFLN.

Long story short, if you are a TW customer, don't get your hopes up.

ETA: I am a lousy speller and too lazy to fix my typos.

" Although the free view will not include the Saturday night game between the New York Giants and Washington Redskins, it will include the Texas Bowl featuring Rutgers vs. Kansas State on Dec. 28 and the Insight Bowl with Minnesota vs. Texas Tech on Dec. 29." [emphasis added]

There is no thursday game that week, and you don't get the Saturday game. This is all about Rutgers. Just about the only people in the world who give two ####s about Rutgers live in the NY area, and none of them have NFLN on their cable systems. The NFL was hoping that those bowl games could be used as leverage, getting more people to complain to their cable companies. But with Rutgers in one of them, they were in somewhat of a bind. The huge NY markets were upset that they wouldn't get the games and starting to blame the NFL. (And I'm guessing some sponsors were getting antsy as well.)

This move is an attempt to make the Cable Cos. the bad guy...it lets the NFL say "if you can't see the Rutgers game, it's not our fault. We're giving it away free that week!" It also essentially forces the cable companies to make room on their system for NFLN in those markets and then take it away from people. The Cable Companies would much rather not give it to you in the first place. It's still all about posturing.

:goodposting: It's a pretty slick move by the NFLN.

:lmao: to quote the chick from Caddyshack: "well tanks for nuttin!!!"

The question that still has yet to be asked..... Why is the NFL Network carry college games. I thought the whole point of the NFL Network was to be all pro football all the time. If they are going to show college bowl games, why not rename the network the "all-Football Network". Makes more sense to me.

Same reason a dog licks his balls: Because it can. It's just another case of exclusive content they can use as leverage in their ongoing battle with the cable companies.
