"Handcuff" players worth taking? (1 Viewer)

I'm starting to think about "handcuff" players that would be worth taking in a limited roster (<20 slots) redraft or short-term keeper league as prospects. By "handcuff," I mean players that are primarily backups (so we're not talking Tolbert or Stewart here, they're obvious plays but rarely available as bargains) that could be a fantasy force if the primary RB went down. And for the record, I'm against taking handcuffs for my own players, I'm basically looking at these as potential blow-up players for this year (and *maybe* next year, in the case of a keeper league)

Ben Tate: I'm not sold on him, but my sister could do well with that offensive line. Worth taking a flyer on.

Javon Ringer: Similar to Tate, but I see him as a lesser version. I'd only take him very late (or $1 for auctions).

Toby Gerhart: I don't see him as anything special, and with that line only a talent like AP will do well. Not worth grabbing.

Rashad Jennings: This guy is pretty good and can probably make something happen, though he won't equal MJD's talent. Worth grabbing.

Delone Carter: I think he's more talented than Addai, so has the potential to put up better numbers than Addai. Worth grabbing, especially for keeper leagues.

Thomas Jones: Not exciting, but he'll put up RB2 numbers if Charles goes down. Worth grabbing.

Did I forget anyone? Any of those that you'd reach a little bit for? I think I like Carter and Jennings best out of those players, though only Carter would be someone I'd reach for a little bit.

Jamie Harper, rookie RB who Matt Williamson mentioned during the summer. Ringer's a bit dinged up and Harper did find the end zone in the first preseason game. A bruiser type who some felt needed to hit the whole with more aggression vs. Minny.

Worth a flier until CJ's situation is over.

I will mention a few that are available after RD 10:

Javon Ringer--His ADP is starting to drift above round 10 so he may not qualify, but is worth mentioning. If ChoJo misses substantial time Ringer will produce solid numbers.

Kendall Hunter--Gore has missed time in 6 of his 7 years. Dixon has looked very ordinary while Hunter has looked explosive. Harbaugh's foot print is a bell cow approach to the RB position.

Marcel Reece--Not really a handcuff in the traditional sense, but if DMac misses time his touches are likely to go north. He has deceptive speed for a FB and Jackson has shown teh willingness to use him in a variety of rolls.

Caddy Williams--he has reinvented himself as an effective 3rd down change of pace RB. Must handcuff for SJax owner.

Marion Barber--I was ready to put a fork in him after last year. Worth a late round pick if you have Forte.

Mike Goodson--If DeWill or JoStew goes down Goodson has the talent to carve out opportunities.

#2 RB on Buccs depth chart--Not sure who this is, but Lumpkin is getting hyped. Situation merits attention.

Danny Ware--a late round target for the Bradshaw owner. He is better suited for Bradshaw's role than Jacobs.

Johnny White--A late round flier that may hold value if Spiller disappoints again.

Who are you handcuffing them with? Desean? Maclin? Wouldn't you be able to find better Wr's on the WW?
Maclin. If Maclin is out for any length of time and SS2 is out, those guys could put up monster #'s with Vick and they cost nothing right now.
This is correct and it seems like it is not looking good for Maclins return anytime soon (IMO)Anytime a team is this tight lipped about one of their star players it certainly has to make you wonder.

Brian Hoyer

Taiwan Jones- DMAC staying healthy last year was the exception, not the norm, thus far in his career. Although he probably wouldn't step in and completely replace DMAC, He could be a great PPR option that could put up numbers similar to what Pierre Thomas did down the stretch the year he came out of nowhere.

Bernard Scott- THE AFC version of JSTEW in terms of "if he could get his shot". No doubt he could absolutely produce if the Bengals were smart enough to use him in a dynamic way.
