Handicapped? (1 Viewer)

We have this guy at our office that’s in a wheel chair. The reason being, he's obese. When I started here fifteen years ago, he was overweight and just kept getting bigger and bigger. First he started using a cane, and now is in the wheel chair. He is able to get out of his car, get the wheel chair out and then wheel himself around, so he certainly isn’t confined to the chair.

I know on a technical basis, he is handicapped. He has a handicap plate and can park in the handicap parking spaces. My question is this..and this is where things gets serious; when I go into the bathroom, should I feel bad about using the handicap accessible stall? I’ve been in the stall when he’s wheeled into the restroom. He used the urinal, but it certainly isn’t his preferred method. We have about twenty men that work here and he is the only handicapped person on the premises. Because of our work function, it would be rare that an outsider would come in and obviously even more rare they would be handicapped. Should I be more sensitive to this guy’s plight?

GB America. The land that you can get fat as hell in and get rewarded by a great parking spot and your own bathroom.

A Few months ago I saw a mid 30's slobby looking couple walk into the grocery store. The woman wasn't obese or anything, but definitely not in good shape. Well, she plopped her fat ash right down on the scooter they have for handicapped people and drove it around the store.

The stall is handicap accessible not handicap only: it's fair game.
This is the correct answer. It's not like a handicapped parking spot, it's there for anyone to use.
this is true, there is no law. it is just a convienence for those who need it

I am curious, if the handicap was different and was not something we assume is becuase of laziness, would responses change? What if the person could not use a urinal, what if the only option was the stall. Would it still be fair game?

of course you could still use it. you just might feel bad if you came out and he was waiting for it.

that seems like you are sensitive to his plight!

Absolutely. I'm not going to skip using the nice, roomy handicapped stall on the off-chance that he needs to use it for the 5 minutes (ok, maybe 15) I'm in there.

I am not saying don't use it

i am just curious how people's thoughts might change if this was not a case of someone who we assume is just a slob, but someone with MS or cererbral palsy or something that we accept as a handicap that needed to use the stall

Why do you want to use the same stall as the fattest person in the office?
Peace of mind that the commode can take the pounding?
I would think this fat guy breaks a sweat getting up from his wheelchair and onto the toilet. You would probably need a beach towel to wipe down the seat in order to use it after him.
Perhaps the monotony of the mid-morning coffee poop has become boring and the OP prefers a challenge.

Wouldn't change my response at all.ETA: If I have to poop so badly that I'm doing it at work, I should be considered at least temporarily handicapped.

We have a handicapped stall here. Extra wide and spacious. I'm on the top floor of a multi-story building with no elevators, though. Who is this thing for??

I use the handicapped stall whenever possible. It's a little slice of heaven and I don't feel the slightest bit bad about using it.

One of our secretaries is morbidly obese to the point needing a walker to get around (and she has handicapped plates as well). I honestly do feel bad for her. She managed to get herself to the point that she's no longer independently ambulatory and it's hard not to feel sorry for her. For the record, her obesity really is self-generated. She's always first in line when somebody brings donuts and I've also seen her scarfing down #### from Burger King over lunch. No doubt she has food issues. But I feel pity for anybody in her state. That has to be an awful way to go through life.
