Handyman questions (1 Viewer)

Nothing here http://m.homedepot.com/b/Estwing/N-5yc1vZiu will get through that? I'm not talking about destroying and removing, just damaging it.
They anchor little metal wedges on the concrete benches here to tear up the boards if they try to grind on them. Any chance to add anything like that?

BTW: went to replace a headlight in my car today, opened the hood, and saw the mechanics forgot to screw the cap back on after changing the oil a couple of weeks ago. Lovely. Dipstick still reads full and the engine isn't filthy or anything so I hope I don't have to worry about debris in there. I can see where a little oil got soaked up on the hood liner/heat shield though. Definitely going to call the shop tomorrow and let them know though.

The wedges are a good thought, but how do I get them to hold? Wouldn't I still need to drill through metal or concrete?

Yup...

Try a few of these

You don't need the waterweld unless you're trying to install it underwater.

Hell, you don't need any wedges either. Just rub a few of those steel sticks together and plant a little glob every 2 feet or so.
I couldnt have said it better if I said it myself.

:oldunsure: the quote system is a little wonky.

OK Fellas.

100 yr old house, with big 3rd floor space.  Walkup stairs, from second floor hallway, good access.  At top of stairs is landing, 90% finished bedroom on the right, unfinished attic on left.

I would like to add a bathroom, finish the attic space into a playroom, and add central air (servicing 3rd floor and 2nd floor).  Nothing too extravagant on finishes, wood flooring.  Closed cell spray foam on roof.  All told probably finishing 200-300 sq ft (7x7 bathroom and balance playroom).

I just had a contractor come through (guy came highly recommended) who estimated it at $100-110K.  My look must have been priceless.

Some numbers he threw around...

$7-15K on HVAC

$9K on plumbing

said 35% materials, balance labor as a rough idea

Half the cost bathroom, half the rest

Thoughts?

No thoughts other than if a contractor is involved you're getting screwed.

The bolded is about the correct ratio, though I don't know if the totals are in line. Get 3 quotes from licensed contractors. Check all three out on every available source.

Retrofitting old houses is a pain in the ###. Modern duct work doesn't fit into 100 year old framing; same with plumbing.

:goodposting:

plus you never ever know what you're going to find once you start opening up walls and floors.... I'm sure he's padded a bit for unforeseen messes.

This looks :moneybag:

will it hold through rain though? Should I consider this one instead?

Why are these wedges so expensive, like $18 a piece, I need like 7-8 of them...
what's the end result on this?

I really, really, really hate skate boarders :shakesfistangrilyandgeriatricly: and they like to do their neato tricks on the sidewalk at our building too. so loud I can't hear conversations or tv. have also gone out to ask them to leave. random grown men... well, 20-somethings, so not kids...in our case- always after midnight- and always filming themselves. most of them leave after a bit (15 minutes or so), but had one guy there for over an hour- woke my kid up. a much higher percentage of "#### you, I can do whatever the #### I want because I'm so special on this stupid skateboard" personalities in that subset of humans... and with them filming everything, the old come back wiht a baseball bat trick doesn't even work any more.

New project, real easy (hopefully)... Right next to my kid's bedroom outside is a curb, the curb is made of metal. A group of like 14-15 year old kids always use it to skateboard, way too much noise (get off my lawn, yea I know). Anyways, I asked them to leave, they've basically told me to #### myself.

My options are pummeling a group of young little ####s and prob going to jail, bad option. Throwing stuff off of the roof at them (giving it thought). Already called 311 and they told me to #### off.

Last option where this thread comes in, destroying the curb. I just need to ruin it enough so that it is unusable by skateboarders. What should I buy for this? This http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0002OVCMO/ref=pd_aw_sim_469_3/190-3566790-0156456?ie=UTF8&dpID=31bAGkm5dkL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL100_SR100%2C100_&refRID=06Y1JMSEZWAN5X3YP3FS or this http://m.homedepot.com/p/Estwing-14-in-Sportsman-s-Axe-with-Leather-Grip-Handle-E24A/100351736

or something else. Shtick is accepted here, but I would like to know what to buy to damage this curb quickly, like under 5 minutes.

TIA
Yeah good luck with that option.

Weld some 6" lengths of re-bar to the curb... about 3 inches apart. Can't skateboard on a steel porcupine.

I got really lucky. About 3 weeks after my post they opened up a skate shop about 3 blocks from my house. Metal curbs in a no parking zone right there. The losers have all migrated.

Don't want to jinx it, but haven't had a single skateboarder on the block in about 3 months.

I think the waterweld stuff recommended in the thread on anything they grind on will do the trick though. That was on deck for me.
