Hard Knocks with the Texans; Coaches like to curse (1 Viewer)

Didn't like the episode. I'm just not going to like this season. I'm not feeling any positional battle, rookie, or UDFA drama. Watching the Texans is not getting me pumped for the season and this show always does that.

I liked the segment with O'Brien and his kid, but that's about it. The rookie skits were a little too heavy on the inside jokes. The O'Brien impression was decent.

Do Hoyer and Mallett hate each other or something? For a QB battle, they have shown surprisingly little interaction there. I mean none. And they haven't done anything much with either of them indiviually, unless I missed it.
Maybe because Mallett went to UM and Hoyer went to MSU? Maybe some deep-seeded feelings from their college days??

So far this was the best episode. This season may not be the best but it is far from the worst. I think the general consensus will say that the Dolphins had the worst Hard Knocks.

Agree, this was really inspiring and always great to see the human side of football and what coaches, players, staff, etc. go through both on and off the field. Give O'Brien and his family for all their strength, courage, and love. If I look critically at the situation, would give extra props to his wife, where the burden clearly lies. An NFL coach (and even one at a high collegiate level such as at Penn State) probably does not have a lot of time for his family.

Even a high school coach doesn't have a lot of time for their family since they most likely teach or have another full time job as well.

Philbin...yeah that season was a suffer-Fest.

I work with special needs children, and the burden on their families is unbelievably daunting. I can't imagine what it's like for a family with an NFL head coach. I'm sure he's able to afford round the clock care and help for his wife, but she (and any parents/guardians who care for special needs kids for that matter) deserve an award.

That child is completely dependent. :(

My favorite part was Cushing puking that orange gatorade over and over again.

Thought this was a better episode that Ep.2, and agreed its not as great as some of the best seasons (Cowboys?) but yeah definitely better than the Dolphins and Falcons seasons.

I liked the CB playing RB and the EZ WR. There's just no star power on this team other than Watt, so the lesser known guys have to be interesting. Hoping there will be some good footage of Clowney actually making a play.

I strongly doubt this. I know he played at Michigan for a bit but he finished his career at Arkansas which is where he is originally from. I can't imagine he cares that much unless he was always a huge Michigan fan.

O'Brien comes off like such a poser with all the unnecessary cursing. Some guys can pull it off. He just can't. Other than the segment with his special needs son (man that must be tough on his wife with his schedule) he has just come off super unlikable.

Not even a little bit surprised that Cushing can't spell. What a clown. 98% chance that guy does something really stupid and ends up in legal trouble within the first 5 years post-retirement. Perfect combination of lack of intelligence and no outlet for his roid-fueled aggression.

Charles James is great. And as someone said earlier, I could watch an hour of Watt and Wilfork every week. They're hilarious.

That WR they cut at the end looked like they pulled him out of the bleachers.

We must be watching a different show.

I like O'Brien, and his enthusiasm and dedication but he's a second generation Ivy Leaguer (both his parents are alums), not a Southie. He's much closer to John Kerry than Will Hunting.

That Killen's Barbecue place is what I would imagine heaven looks like.
It's damn good my friend. Killen's Steakhouse (their mainstay) is top notch.

Haven't had the chance to catch this Hard Knocks but look forward to seeing my city. And yes, Cushing is very Jersey and a meathead. Dude rolls up to my friend's restaurant in his orange Lambo quite often. Definitely not someone I'd kick it with.

Yeah honestly he's been the most likable since Rex.
I'm on the other side with TLEF. Completely phony personality. I'd buy him a beer just for his dad work, but that segment is blinding people, IMO.

I could watch JJ and Vince all day, though.

"Spell spaghetti."

"Nah."

Would also tune in for at least one week for a show dedicated to cut bait's wife swinging from a rope.

Really, Ryan Mallett? The old "my alarm didn't go off" excuse. Yeah, right. His eyes were bloodshot as Hell.

I'd have so much more respect for people if they just said, "I went on a bender and couldn't get out of bed."

I don't care about the dad segment honestly. All it showed me is that his wife is at home taking care of his kid while he's probably in the office or on the road 200+ days out of there.

He just seems genuine with his players to me.

That was laughable. My 14-yr old chimed in seeing that and said: "so he's basically using the dog ate my homework excuse?" lol....

Born in Dorchester but raised in Andover and went to St John's Prep in Danvers and then to Brown University. Screams upper middle class fwiw.

Very unimpressed with O'Brien based on this show.

Who cares what class he is? I figured the majority of coaches in the NFL grew up being in the upper-middle class. Many of them are from football families.

I'm losing more and more respect for Mallett the more I watch this show. He just seems like an idiot. I don't think he's very professional at all.

That's why the Pats got him in the 3rd round when he was discussed as a first round talent.

WEAKNESSES

Flashes the ability to run through progressions but has lapses in judgment and can force throws when pressured. Accuracy is solid but needs to become more consistent. Ball will sail when footwork gets sloppy. Does not have the athleticism to pick up much yardage with his feet at the next level. Potential maturity/character issues.

It's possible he's not completely comfortable in front of a camera. He's seems genuine to me.I thought the Falcons coach last season came off as more "showy" and doing/saying things that he might not normally to play up to the camera.

I see it too, and I think what seems off about it is that he uses the F-word like it's capitalized, like it is Meaningful and Impactful, and it probably is for him. Like he's thinking, they'll know how seriously I mean this because I accentuated it with a Bad Word!

But I don't think most people relate to that because that word is pretty casual in most settings we find ourselves in, y'know? In the end it doesn't really make him unlikable in my eyes, but it does make him seem culturally out of touch.

It makes him sound dumb. He doesn't seem capable of putting two consecutive sentences together without swearing at least once in there somewhere. I guess that might fly for the players, but as a coach I'd like to think you could express yourself without having to resort to cursing all the time.

+1 it was so bad at times I swear I saw some players rolling their eyes. Like a scene from The Office almost.

I hear it the exact opposite way, like he's very intentionally putting them in there, like that's not how he would naturally talk. So very capable of and possibly would prefer to talk without swearing. But the way he does it sounds awkward.

True, sometimes it does seem like he's throwing f-bombs in there for the heck of it at totally random points. Either way, the guy comes off as a buffoon.

I'm not sure if the Hard Knocks producers and directors have much say in anything with this show but I know how reality TVs shows are and they are more scripted than anyone knows. There may not be script of words but there is a plan they try to follow. I get the feeling that the show stays out of the team's way as much as possible though.

The show would be laughed out of the city if they presented a script.

Last two episodes were great. My opinion is that O'Brien had Charles James in his office as a direct result of Hard Knocks showing O'Brien gushing about James the week before. Basically telling him to stay motivated and that his roster spot was not a given (I think it obviously is). I have no problem with the swearing either. Marvin Lewis, Ryan and a host of other coaches all swore too. It's a tactic. He even swears when trying to keep Watt motivated. He's also direct when dealing with players and it's obvious they respect him.

Yeah, I get it. I just don't know what that has to do with what was said. Are you telling me smart people don't swear? Because I'll ####### tell you something...
