Harper's cheap shot on Steve Smith (2 Viewers)

Just read this article on yahoo about harper's reaction when asked about his hit on Steve Smith. Dude is a grade A ######## if you ask me, see below:http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-saints-harperfined

METAIRIE, La. (AP)Saints safety Roman Harper(notes) sat in front of his locker wearing a big grin when asked for his reaction to a $15,000 fine the NFL levied on him for his late hit on Carolina receiver Steve Smith. My reaction to it is the smile on my face, Harper said.Harper shoved Smith to the ground as the receiver slowly crossed the goal line during the first half of the Saints 30-27 victory over the Panthers on Sunday. A brief scrum between the NFC South Division rivals ensued. When asked if the fine was worth it, Harper responded, Oh yes it was. I think the point was taken and everybody that needed to get the point got it. I think the NFL got the point. I got the point. Everybody that was involved got the point, Harper continued. So I think it was good for this team. I think it was good for everything.Harper had said after the game that he just lost it when he saw Smith slowing down in apparent celebration before crossing the goal line.Smith said Harper misread the situation. He felt that I was slowing down and trying to disrespect somebody and that wasnt my intention, Smith said. With physics, when you accelerate at some point you have to slow down. So I wasnt slowing down to hot dog in front of someone, because at the end of the pylons, you have to stop or theres a large blue pad … that you will run into. So I was slowing down, not to disrespect anybody, but to decelerate.Smith added that when he looked back as he slowed down, he wasnt doing so mockingly as Harper suspected, but was in fact checking to see if Saints cornerback Jabari Greer(notes) was still in pursuit.I was looking at Greer. I played against him a number of times and whether he makes a good play or a bad play, hes going to hustle, Smith said. Hes going to try to run down there and try to strip the ball and not allow you to get in. So I was looking at him. When advised of Smiths explanation, Harper appeared unmoved.Thats a good story. That sounds very legit. You tell him I like it, Harper said. It seemed like he studied. He learned the names. He filled in all the right blanks. I cant complain with that.Harper has said he will not offer an apology and Smith said he never expected one, but the two are scheduled to see each other again when Carolina visits the Superdome on Jan. 1.You best believe Im not looking for an apology, Smith said. I didnt lose any sleep over it and wont lose any sleep over it. When we play them down there Im not going to walk up to him and say, `Can I have an apology? Can we make amends? Its football. But if going up and catching a ball and scoring is disrespectful, I have no control over it, Smith continued. The object of the game, when Cam (Newton) threw the ball was to catch it and do the best I can with it. And thats what I did. If he wasnt a fan of it, I understand. Some people like blue cheese. I like ranch. Hes obviously more of a blue cheese guy.
Not saying I completely buy Smith's story, but it definitely wasn't a blatant celebration and Harper's response comes off as uneducated and classless. Personally think he should be suspended a game for his comments afterwards, see then if he still thinks it was worth it. Thoughts?

Good lord. It's not as if Steve Smith hasn't been a punk many times over the years. He has deserved a lot more over his career. Remember the punch he landed on a teammate while his back was turned? Didn't he do that more than once?

Ever notice physics works different for Jerry rice, Andre Johnson and Marvin Harrison compared to hot dogging guys like Smith, Desean Jackson and Randy Moss.

Smith was hot dogging because that's who he is, I don't think he does it to show up anyone. His physics excuse is utter BS.

To the OP, are you high? You really think Roman Harper should get suspended for that when creeps like James Harrison, Brandon Merriweather and Dunta Robinson go for the kill shot repeatedly.

If the NFL makes Harper out to be the poster child for dirty play then they are ######ed.

FWIW I think those players are all scumbags as well, guess the way Harper came off in this article just rubbed me the wrong way, but apparently as long as the guy you're hitting is known as a showboat then its cool to clean his clock well after the play.

It was a cheap shot and then it was over. There wasn't much left to talk about after that. Smith didn't seen bothered by it after the game, and brushed it off without issue.

Good lord. It's not as if Steve Smith hasn't been a punk many times over the years. He has deserved a lot more over his career. Remember the punch he landed on a teammate while his back was turned? Didn't he do that more than once?
Steve Smith has had an altercation twice in his career, and both times were with someone on his own team. He had to go to anger management for that. Other than those two times within his own team, when has Smith been a punk many times over? What has he done to deserve "a lot more" over his career?

Being a punk and sucker punching your teammate and having another altercation with a teammate is being a punk many times over and deserves a lot more.

Don't lessen the sucker punch and other fight because it's only 2 fights as opposed to my statement of "many". He's still a punk for sucker punching his teammate with his back turned and deserves much more than he got on Sunday.

I only remember fights with teammates. The guy has always been tough on game days and gone over the middle without hesitation, and, in my opinion, played the game the right way. I don't think he deserved "more".

Technically speaking, Harper's cheap shot could have been construed as a hit against a defenseless player. Had Smith been injured as a result of the hit, the NFL would have come down a lot harder on Harper. I am not saying Smith isn't a punk, or that it wasn't a punk move, but that kind of hot dogging happens all of the time, yet you rarely see cheap shots like this after the player has already clearly crossed the goal line.

Yeah not sure how anyone can think it was a brutal hit. It was a shove, then they all pushed each other around. Big whup.

Lucas and Smith regularly feuded at practice for three years prior to the fight, and when they went to the sidelines on that hot day of practice, Lucas was taunting Smith about the cheap shot he made on Bright years earlier which Smith tried for years to put behind him. It struck a nerve with Smith, and he turned around and hit Lucas. Smith apologized to him, and Lucas forgave him. They both realized that they were very similar, and they became friends. Lucas said it was a blessing in disguise that it happened. Things aren't always what they seem, and Smith is not a punk that deserved more than he got on Sunday.

Sure he is. Anytime you hit someone when they aren't looking you're a punk.

What was Roman Harper doing? Was he standing up for defenseless Ken Lucas and Anthony Bright (The two teammates that were dumb enough to tangle with Smitty)?Or was he just taking a dumb cheap shot? Is Roman Harper the Daredevil, or Batman?? Is he handing out justice for long-forgotten wrongs? Or is he an old, slow guy, playing out the string, who takes his frustrations out on players he can't cover anymore by taking shots at them, three steps into the end zone?Personally, I think it was the latter. And if it was the latter, then Steve Smith hitting a teammate 3 years ago shouldn't enter into it. Doesn't matter who Harper did it to, it's as dirty as if he had done it to Peyton Manning or Steven Gostkowski. Now, you don't have to feel BAD for Smitty, because of his past. No worries. But, isn't it a bit contradictory that a player that sucker punched his old teammate gets your 'punk' label, and a S that personal fouls a WR is no big deal? You are going on and on about what Smith deserves, and how he has been a punk repeatedly (when we only have the Lucas fight as 'real' proof that he did anything wrong). Awful high standards you hold these players to, unless it's on the field apparently.Agree that the hit was no big deal. But it's still a penalty. The severity of the personal foul might be in question, but not the fact that it was a bush-league personal foul, that was uncalled for. A QB gets a helmet-to-helmet, or that leading with the helmet nonsense for defenders, happens within the course of a game, and I would never call a player dirty on the basis of that. And if Smitty had landed wrong after Harper's shot, and sprained an ankle, or twisted an MCL, there would be multi-game suspensions, and everyone would be calling for his head.

I'll admit what Harper did was wrong, but Smith is still a punk for hitting an unsuspecting teammate.

What Smith did was wrong, but it's not who he is. Nobody was more disappointed in Steve Smith than Steve Smith himself. It also wasn't a good idea for Lucas to taunt Smith with something that he was very ashamed about. Smith apologized to Lucas, and Lucas forgave him, and they forgave each other for words said over the years. I hope you don't have children, because you only seem focused on the mistake, not on the most important thing which was the asking for forgiveness, and the acceptance of it. People can redeem themselves of mistakes.

So, you're ashamed of something you did and you do it again when someone makes fun of you? Look, the very least he could have done was face him like a man instead of punching him when he wasn't looking.

I must be dense, but I don't get it. And I am guessing if it was a known gay reference that the league would not be happy.

Smith and his wife, Angie, have three children. He coaches his son’s soccer team in his spare time, and is a partner in Athletes United for Youth, a charity organization that provides educational, programmatic, and structured support to youth housed within under-served communities. In May 2008, Smith announced that he purchased a near-50% interest in the existing Velocity Sports Performance franchise in Charlotte and an equal ownership percentage in any future Charlotte area Velocity centers. Smith also announced that he is working at Morgan Stanley's Charlotte office as a financial planning intern, working alongside his own financial advisor, Derek L.Copeland, who is Senior Vice President with the Copeland Sivak Group.
Why would this man not be able to spell physics?

:goodposting: This explains it perfectly. Re-watched the video and I remembered the hit to be harder than it actually was, but it was still a blatant cheap shot and bush league move. Couldn't believe the amount of criticism I received from the first 8 or so posts, didn't know holding players to some semblance of maturity and integrity and being upset about such a childish move that could have resulted in injury to a star player would result in being labeled a "wussy" or otherwise.

Hmmm, wonder why one would think that... I think it might be a word rhyming w/ "tack"....or "sack"

Nature of the beast. If you start a thread about a cheap shot, who is more likely to respond: Someone that agrees with you, or the he-man who thinks any shot is fair game? Someone who disagrees with you is MUCH more likely to respond.Hey, those truckers that have the "How's my driving?" bumper stickers? Do you think people call to file a report about a trucker that did a beautiful job? Of course not.So a thread like this is going to get most of its responses from the 'untwist your panties/where's your dress?' crowd.

omally, I'm a long time Panthers fan and I never heard this much detail about that incident. Where did you get this from?As for the PF... IMO, it was a real punk move by Harper, but Smitty will not sucker punch him, he'll just repeatedly burn him next time. And the next time after that.... and so on, for however long they meet on the football field.

It was stupid and a jerk move by Harper, but more than likely Smith deserved it. He's been a lowlife his whole career.

I feel compelled to point out that Smith practically disappeared after that play. I'm not sure he touched the ball once the entire second half.

It's probably also because of who Harper hit. Steve Smith is not exactly known as a stand-up guy and a lot of people probably see him as deserving of taking an extra shot or two.If it had been somebody like, say DeAngelo Williams instead, people would probably feel a little differently.

The thing that gets me is whether Roman Harper should be known as the guy who hit Steve Smith after he was in the endzone, or the guy who missed Marshawn Lynch on 3 seperate occasions on one play in the playoffs last year?

I get it, and the funny part is, I love Smitty. I think he is blast to watch, and is great on the field. I guess I also think his biggest problem is, he punches hard. If he never broke anyone's nose, no one would remember his fight. But make no mistake, ANY comment about a dirty hit, unless someone gets hurt, and people come running to tell us this is football, and everyone should sack up. It's lame. If you cant knock a guy out legally, then you shouldn't be taking cheap shots. That ain't tough, its desperate.

Caveat: Saints homer

What Harper did was stupid and cheap no question.

However, why has no one made mention of the fact that during the course of this melée Smith jerked Malcolm Jenkins head up by the facemask while Jenkins was lying flat on the ground? This is beyond cheap.....it's life threatening. Smith is and has always been a thug and should have been fined double what Harper was.

Smith did diddly-jack after that play. Saints won a give-take game. Harper got slapped on the wrist for a chicken-stiff jaw-dropping cheap shot.

The yahoo story ref'd here asked "was it worth it?"

GEEE, MR. SPICOLI, I DON'T KNOW!!!

I noticed this too. Smith jerking Jenkins up looked far more dangerous than Harper's shove.

I disagree. The NFL needs to stop the instigators. Too many times, a guy takes a cheap shot, other guy retaliates and we get offsetting penalties. Letting the initial target exact some revenge+ will stop this kind of BS.

You must follow football really closely....Harper IS an elite safety. He has been a pro bowler for the last two years and won a Superbowl. Over the last four years he has averaged 80-16 and 6 big plays per season and has rarely missed a down. If nothing else, he has been the one consistent thing the Saints have had on defense during these last 4 years and he's off to a good start again this season.

Interestingly, though, last week was his worst statistical game in 3 years.
