Lucas and Smith regularly feuded at practice for three years prior to the fight, and when they went to the sidelines on that hot day of practice, Lucas was taunting Smith about the cheap shot he made on Bright years earlier which Smith tried for years to put behind him. It struck a nerve with Smith, and he turned around and hit Lucas. Smith apologized to him, and Lucas forgave him. They both realized that they were very similar, and they became friends. Lucas said it was a blessing in disguise that it happened. Things aren't always what they seem, and Smith is not a punk that deserved more than he got on Sunday.

omally, I'm a long time Panthers fan and I never heard this much detail about that incident. Where did you get this from?

I remember them talking about the fight in an interview about a year after it happened in more detail, but here is an article about two months after the incident where it speaks close to what happened article

“He felt that I was slowing down and trying to disrespect somebody and that wasn’t my intention,” Smith said. “With physics, when you accelerate at some point you have to slow down. So I wasn’t slowing down to hot dog in front of someone, because at the end of the pylons, you have to stop or there’s a large blue pad … that you will run into. So I was slowing down, not to disrespect anybody, but to decelerate.”

Really?The only time Harper shows up is on highlights for the opposing teams. This guy acts as if he's an elite player. He's not.

He shouldn't be suspended, but if I'm the DC of HC, I chew him out for having a low IQ and hurting his team with a 15 yard penalty. He's Brandon Marshall smart. And his comments are going to get the attention of the league. The next time he does something stupid, Goodell is going to drop the hammer on him.

You must follow football really closely....Harper IS an elite safety. He has been a pro bowler for the last two years and won a Superbowl. Over the last four years he has averaged 80-16 and 6 big plays per season and has rarely missed a down. If nothing else, he has been the one consistent thing the Saints have had on defense during these last 4 years and he's off to a good start again this season.

Interestingly, though, last week was his worst statistical game in 3 years.

Was waiting for someone to comment on this as I read through the thread. He may struggle in coverage at times, but he makes up for it in other areas. Few safeties in the game play the box like Harper does, he's also a pretty good pass rusher
