Has a team ever lost when leading 10-0 in the 1st? (1 Viewer)

Wasnt there a famous game between Philly and Pittsburgh where the Pirates were ahead 9-0 after one inning and one of the Pirates announcers said that if the Pirates lose that game he would walk home to Pittsburgh. Yes, Pittsburgh lost. He later did the walk from Philly to Pittsburgh and raised money for charity.

I believe that the Phillies beat the Pirates in a game where the Bucs scored 10 or so in the first.

Steve Jeltz hit a few out from each side of the plate, which if you remember Jeltz, was pretty silly.

Edit: Yup

“If we lose this game, I’ll walk home”

After his playing career, Rooker, well-known for speaking his mind as a player, joined the Pirates’ radio and television broadcast team, with whom he worked from 1981 (one year after he retired) through 1993.

Rooker’s most famous moment as a broadcaster came on June 8, 1989, during a Pirates’ road game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Veterans Stadium. The Pirates scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning, including three on a Barry Bonds home run. As the Phillies came to bat in the bottom of the first, Rooker said on the air, “If we lose this game, I’ll walk home.” Von Hayes answered with two two-run home runs, in the first and third innings. Steve Jeltz also hit two homers, in the fourth and sixth. The Phillies, trailing now only 11-10 in the eighth inning, scored the tying run on a wild pitch, then took the lead on Darren Daulton’s two-run single and went on to win 15-11. Rooker had to wait until after the season to make good on his “walk home” promise, conducting a charity walk from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh.

Reminds me of this classic game... a Dave Kingman special. Check that nutty box score.

I actually saw the entire game on TV. I know Schmitt hits the HR in the 10th but the real difference was that the Phillies pitcher Homers in the top of the 1st; the Cubs pitcher Donnie Moore get a triple in the bottom of the 1st and dies on third. I wonder if there was ever another game where opposing pitchers both get extra base hits in the 1st inning?
