has anybody ever done their draft with no paper lists? (1 Viewer)

for my local league, i'm seriously thinking about just winging it at the draft by taking with me only a copy of the nfl schedule showing bye weeks. no ranking lists, no cheat sheets. just what is up in my noggin.

i mean, after looking at all this fantasy football stuff every day for a month and a half and having already done one draft, its all up there anyway. i've been in this league for 12 yrs., have won it before, and its all with co-workers or friends. it might be kind of fun and sure would add a new twist to it all for me. i might even be able to finagle somebody to trade me an extra draft pick just to do it.

whad'a think?

ESPN Fantasy Rule #9 - Don't bring a cheat sheet.

Honestly, that may be the worse idea I've ever heard... but I will gladly start another money league and invite you to join if you wanna try it out this year.

I don't use any once mid august hitsmocked so much I don't need em'.Thankfully(and pathetically I suppose) there are plenty of fellow no life mock draft addicts around here that likely are the same

I've always thought it would be fun to have a league where no lists or paper or pencil or laptops were allowed outside of the commish logging picks.

If you pick a guy that's already been drafted, you forfeit your turn that round.

If you feel you know your stuff that well, then you should dominate your draft regardless of bye weeks.

Plus, having absolutely nothing at all is 100% better than even a single sheet of paper.

If you are going to do it, then do it right...bring nothing at all.

Even if your noggin is very good to recall the best players. Is your noggin good to recall their bye weeks???
I suppose focusing on the word noggin forced you to look past the part where he was bringing an NFL schedule showing bye weeks. But even if he didn't, if someone can memorize (roughly) 200 players, don't you think he could memorize 32 bye weeks?I say go for it. The first few rounds won't be hard. It'll be difficult for you in the late rounds when you're going for depth/sleepers, though. You've actually got me considering doing the same thing in my final draft this weekend. One more obstacle, as I think this through for the first time: keeping track of who has been taken. Do you plan to bring a pen and paper to write down everyone's selections so you don't keep picking guys who have already been taken?

I did one last year where I had a schedule only, and a blank piece of paper to chart my picks & everyone's positional needs. I got back into town late, and had to go to the draft instead of going home first. It was the least prepared I'd ever felt - I came home from a trip to Canada, so I hadn't seen much except CFL football & some news. I figured I could draft an okay team just using my head.

Drafted pretty well, hit on some nice RB flyers (TJones, Anderson). traded well, won the league. People said they were hoping I prepped a lot this year at the draft.

Good luck.

If you walk up to the board to pick, you can just go through the player sheets/stickers when you get up there -- it should be pretty easy actually if that is the case -- just don't take longer than 15 seconds or you will look like an unprepared idiot riffling through player sheets.

If you do it, report back, I wanna hear about it. One of my local leagues is a $100 10 teamer with friends, I think I will do it this weekend.

Just to say that wasn't the topic starter...was a different poster bringing the bye week sheet!"I suppose focusing on the word noggin forced you to look past the part where he was bringing an NFL schedule showing bye weeks."

I think I could do it, except that it's helpful to have a cheatsheet so you know when players are going to be taken by others. You may know who you want, but it's a little more guesswork to figure out when you need to take him unless you have some type of representative cheat sheet. Unless, you've done so many mock drafts that you have that memorized too.

I LOVE the first part of the idea, but man, that second part is just brutal. Not to mention, the commish can't log picks then - it has to be some objective third party.

Two years running. I always bring the worst mags possible, and let the other guys borrow them ("Don't let anyone else see this...").
Yep, I try to do the same :)I've had to leave my Footballguys stuff home the last couple of years though, because I don't want them even knowing about this little gem (Sorry, Joe!). Or i'll throw them off by pointing them at Fanball.Anecdotal evidence: my girlfriend is in the league now for the second year. Both years, I gave her the footballguys custom cheatsheet. She finished first last year in the regular season (I ended up winning the league, but she lost a tough first round playoff with the second highest point total by far). She again has a great team - probably better than I do, because I tend to adlib there too much :)

After about round 8 I'm guessing I wouldn't get another pick. I would never remember who everyone else drafted after the big guys.

Two years ago, we had a guy show up with nothing. He didn't even write his picks down.

Before I tell you how he drafted, it's important to know this guy is NOT a fantasy geek. His first year playing FF was four years ago and his 1st round pick that year was....Akers. Yes...a kicker in the first.

So, when he shows up to the draft two years ago with nothing, and knowing he hadn't spent weeks prepping for it, a few of us were thinking "take Akers off the board now."

Well, he nails the draft...ended up with a great team and WON the freakin' league!

Here's the killer part. We don't use a draft board. The guy NEVER called a name that had already been selected -- NEVER!

Un-freakin'-believable! After the draft, several of us were :jawdrop:

This is the first year I haven't used any lists. I only got stung once when I got two QB's with the same bye weeks. I pretty know the bye weeks for my critical backups that I will be targeting in the mid rounds. Only got stung once this year with two QB's having the same bye week but still wasn't a big deal.

The important question is:

WHY?

Do you feel that you are that much better than everyone that you need to put yourself at a disadvatage. Although I agree that if you ahve a draft board and stickers it wouldn't be as much of a disadvantage, but my league doesn't have them.

I'm going to get the papers, get the papers.

i like that others are thinking along this line.

its a local money league, costs about $50+ to play, but we settle up at the end.

i would take a schedule and would have to have a paper draft chart where i write down who gets picked by which team. we don't use a big board or anything. if i started routinely calling out guys who were already drafted, it would really bog things down and people might start to get pissed.

i think i'd do allright except for kickers and my 3rd tight ends.

if its a league full of old friends, i think the point is a little showboating and braggery at your knowledge without cheet sheets would be worth the small risk of totally bombing the draft. Depending on how many rounds your draft is, id say only the last 5 or 6 rounds or so would really even be slightly difficult for most guys who are deep in FF
