Has anyone been to Centralia, PA? (1 Viewer)

SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
I'm thinking about going up there one weekend to take some pictures. I know it's not like a tourist attraction, but I just kind of want to see it. I've looked online and see that a lot of people go there to take pictures.

Was just wondering if anyone here had ever been and if so, can point me to the main spots to really see. And also, maybe, point out where to stay away from.

TIA

TIS

yes.. nothing to see..
Nothing to see, like don't bother going? Or nothing to see, like "dude, it's a ghost town"?

I realize most, if not all, of the buildings are gone. But I hear the abandoned highway is cool. The cemeteries are pretty cool. And there are some nice spots where the smoke is billowing out of the ground that are interesting to see.

It's only like a 90 minute drive, so it's not like I'm going out of my way too much to go see it.

Drove through there on the way to storm restoration duty about 4 years ago. You can see where some of the houses and streets used to be. This is a map of the town. I wished I could've stayed longer; it was kinda creepy. :scared:

What are "OUT AREAS" on that map? Is that like Keep Out? I know they say that some of the low lying areas can have gases trapped that can be deadly.

The creepiness is what really makes me want to go check it out and snap some pictures.

Drive past/through it all the time. Do not waste your time unless you go at dusk and want to creep around trying to scare yourself/friends etc.

TBH, I don't know. I was in and through the town in like 60 seconds. All I know is what I saw from observing the speed limit. I was already behind schedule getting to my destination and I didn't want to catch any grief for being way late.

You really missed out on its creepy days when all of the building were still up.
Yeah. I bet. That would have been really awesome. But I still think there's got to be a little bit of a creepiness factor. No?

Again, if it were a 3 hour drive, I'd probably say no. But an hour and a half drive may just be worth it to go and see for myself. And even if it was a waste, it really won't bother me.

I would go at dusk with a few friends and walk around. There is a grave yard up there (I believe full of Vets) and a few places that you can see a nice orange glow through the ground, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. Just gotta watch for some of the local kids with 4-wheelers, they can be a PIA

You should do it. I want to visit that area some day too but I am interested in that type of thing.

I worked at the Love Canal area in the early 90s. I spent a decent amount of time driving around the abandoned neighborhoods. It was strange and also disappointing.

there used to be a sign that read "Mine fire is our future" or something like that.. it is straight out of the Walking Dead.. not sure if it is still there - now it is just weeds. You can hardly even see where the streets used to be

Yeah, I read a book about this place when I lived in Texas. Sounded cool. Now that I live right here, I really want to just go check it out. After reading the book, I have a mental picture of it in my mind, but it would be nice to actually see it.

And again, I realize most of the buildings are gone and it's just land now, but I still think it could be cool.

Never been, but it looks creepy even on Google Earth street view. Route 61 running parallel with "Route 61 Destroyed". Aerial images are from 2012 while the street views are from '08. Some of the historical images ('04, '05) are interesting as well.

You need to post pics when you're done.

If I get any good ones, I will. But I am strictly an iPhone photographer. I haven't quite graduated to a DSLR yet. But I've gotten some pretty awesome pictures with the phone.
