Has anyone been to South America? (1 Viewer)

Been to Chile, Peru, and Brazil.  Also been to the island of Curacao and Colombia.  First choice to go back to would be Peru for the AMAZING views as well as some of the best food I've ever eaten.

After that, Curacao is nice if you like diving.  Colombia was fun for what it was, but wouldn't necessarily recommend as a vacation spot.  Chile is nice, but not significant.

Brazil, well, just fly over it and throw your money out the window.  That way, you get the same effect without getting shot or, more likely, stabbed.

I spent a year backpacking through South America in 2010.

Venezuela I would not recommend at this time due to the political situation.

Brazil is HUGE.  I liked Salvador and Rio of the larger cities.  There are many smaller, colonial towns that were great.  The beaches were great but over packed.  As others have said, a bit more dangerous than the other countries.

Uruguay is a hidden little gem of a country.  Great beaches, nice people, less tourists than Brazil or Argentina.

Argentina is a must visit IMO.  Buenos Aires is awesome.  You could easily spend a week there and head to Uruguay for a day trip.  Try to visit Iguazu Falls (I preferred the Argentinian side to the Brazilian side).  Patagonia has plenty of beautiful places worth seeing.  The Bariloche area is a pretty nice stop with the Lakes district and some smaller mountain towns nearby and is along the way to Chile.  The Perito Moreno glacier and El Chalten/Fitz Roy are close to each other a little further south.   The northern area near Salta has some awesome topography.

Chile has some of the best national parks in the world.  Good hiking in Tierre Del Fuego and Torres del Paine.  The Atacama desert in the North was fantastic.

Bolivia is very underrated.  Lots to see and do and was the most culturally different.  Salar Uyuni, La Paz, the Pampas.

Peru would be another great country to visit and I would focus on Cuzco, the Incan valleys, and Machu Picchu.

Ecuador IMO is another hidden gem.

Colombia was fantastic.  I enjoyed Medellin, Cartegena, and Parque Tayronas.

My recommendation for someone visiting South America for the first time would be either Argentina or Peru, and you cannot go wrong with either of those options.

I go to Peru annually to do humanitarian vision exams.   Seen some of the tourist stuff like Sacred Valley and Machupicchu twice and know Cusco really well but other than that spent a lot of time with people in poor areas.  Great great people.

I've been to these cities

Colombia - Bogota and Cartagena

argentina - Buenos Aires

Uruguay - Monte Video

Brazil- Rio

Chile - Santiago

Peru - Machu Picchu/Cusco

my best experiences were in Argentina and Colombia but it spends what you are looking for.

Spent 3 weeks in Buenos Aires for business back in 1997. Long time ago but it was a fantastic trip. I had enough down time that I was able to visit and explore and best of all it was on someone else's dime.

Bottom line is I'd do it again if I had the opportunity and would recommend. Fun city and had a great time.

Ecuador IMO is another hidden gem.
Went to Ecuador 2 years ago.  It was fantastic.  Was in Guayaquil for several days and then spent a couple days further north up the coast at a fishing town, Puerto Lopez.  Only downsides were that there was a lot of construction everywhere and the people there only speak Spanish (so if you can't speak it or don't have a translator, you will have trouble getting around).

However, the crime is much less of an issue than most SA countries (we never felt in danger) and the beaches are amazing (the Pacific water is actually warm there).  We went out off the coast in August which is whale mating season and got to watch the Humpbacks breaching all over the place and then did snorkeling.  The seafood was fabulous, but they sure do love their chicken and plantains.

BA is a FANTASTIC city.  I am going back in November.  However, be very careful with expensive watches etc--my friend was warned by several people and still managed to get his Rolex stolen 5 minutes after I left him to return to my hotel.

Spent 2 weeks in Buenos Aires earlier this year. Highly recommended.
Buenos Aires is awesome.  Take a side trip to Mendoza.

Chile.  I found the coastal scenes very meh.  I found the wine country/mountain regions beautiful.

I'll be in Santiago this week. Got a day and a half to do whatever. Any advice?
I spent a couple of days there 18 months ago.  If you're a photographer, I went on a walking urban photography tour led by a pro photog (she was an 8+ btw).  Saw a bunch of cool sites in Santiago and met a couple other tourists.  Well worth it IMO.  On day 2, I hired a taxi to drive me around wine country for the day.  Beautiful sites but mediocre wine.

If you're interested, I will try to find a link to the photography tour.

I'll take a PM if you can find it. I'm a big fan of the small tours where you walk, bike, etc. around the city.
