No but I’ve stayed multiple times at the Marriott Ocean Beach Club in Maui and it’s fantastic. I’d imagine it’s an equally good time.

We're not picky. Looked up the regular price and it's a quarter of that and it's oceanfront. Will start making the plans soon and look through all the threads on here for how to plan out our 7 days.

Do it and don’t look back. It’s a great area. Might be a little rainy in Dec but not bad either way. In a week you’ll be able to hit all the main attractions on the island and still have plenty of beach time, etc. to kick back and relax.

Gonna look through all the threads on here for tips, but should we just stick with Kauai if only there for 7 nights, or explore some other islands during the day?

I'd just spend the whole week on Kauai. Lot's of hiking. Na'Pali cruise is a bucket list item.

Have only been to Kauai once so there will be others who know the area way better but stayed in Poipu at the Sheraton. It's for the tourists but there are very nice spots to eat nearby at The Shops at Kukui‘ula. a little farmer's market there as well that I'm sure they still do.
Def hit up the north end of the island by car (Princeville and Hanalei) very, very beautiful. Can easily fill a day up with that.
See the Napali coast from the water, there are tons of snorkel tours that take off from the towns on the south side of the island that wrap around the island. This is a must do IMO.
If you do end up going to Maui or Big Island I have all kinds of suggestions

Don't overlook the Waimea Canyon... I think it's Route 550 that drives up through there.... probably the most beautiful drive I've ever taken in my life.

We have stayed a couple times nearby at Poipu Shores Condos. The Marriott looks nice but we just walk down the beach and stop and have drinks at the bar several times. We are headed back the first couple weeks of December. Its a great area and the sunnier side of the island. Kauai is less commercialized than some of the other islands like Maui and will pretty much shut down by 10 pm. But there are some great things to do on the island. Book your rental car and flights now. Many of the restaurants are already booked in December, some aren't taking reservations yet. Local restaurants include Beach House (our favorite), Merrimans (no view, but excellent food), Red Salt, Rum Fire, Keoki's Paradise (very popular with live entertainment), Brennecke's Broiler. The Grand Hyatt is a few miles away on Shipwreck beach. They have an excellent breakfast we hit a few times. The Tide Pools restaurant is nice and expensive (lunch more reasonable). You can get a day pass for the beach and pools (no real slides-more lazy river/pool/lagoon like). Like other's have said, you need to get to the Napili (snorkeling,sunset cruise or helicopter), Waimea canyon and Princeville (not too much up there but very pretty.

Yup. It is right there. You will drive right by it to get to your hotel.
If you take the snorkel / boat tour you'll prolly take off from a town just to the west of where you are staying (we used Capt Andy's) - They were great - many options though.
If you are a coffee guy this place is right on the way back and is worth stopping in to get caffeinated: Kauai Coffee Plantation

We used Holo Holo for the Na'Pali coast cruise. They used to have a deal through Costco.
Also liked kayaking up to Wailua Falls

We only drove through Hanalei but stopped briefly on the return trip. The sun was lower in the sky, after a big rain burst, hitting those mountains with that late afternoon glow. Was one of the most beautiful settings I have ever seen. Seriously looked fake it was so perfect.
Saw some peeps paddling up the river, I think it was Wailoi stream. I was very jealous.

I’ll be on the Big Island Aug 20-29. Friends were just there. Said it’s a must to start booking restaurants 30 days out. Several resorts are only letting guests book at their restaurants. Staffing/capacity issues. In any event dinner spots were very hard to come by for my friends. Don’t know if the same for other Islands but would guess so

Maybe check out the bus system there.
I know on Honolulu there is a pretty nice system to take you to most of the major points. It's not as convenient but it's doable. A quick search says Kauai has something similar.

This is a big problem on the island but supposedly supply is getting better, so I'd keep checking. Based on my experience and all of the intel I gathered, seems like it's a must have to have a car esp for 7 days. Turo (airbnb of car rentals) is another option, but prices are going to be high. For reference, I paid $600 for 8 days there on Budget Car Rental and I feel like I got lucky. Turo prices were 180 to 250 per day in June.

Yes, had a patient just tell me about turo and looked. Plenty available there. Money isn't really a factor at this point because we're saving so much on the rental.

I should also point out that just walking the coastline in Poipu is gorgeous. There are some specific hiking spots such as Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail, but you don't even need to hit those to encounter waves crashing into black lava rock with sea turtles around. You'll want a car if there for your week but the local scene is pretty good.

Big Save Market close to Poipu Beach in Koloa to get some groceries if you are in a condo. With lack of rental cars, Worst case, many tours will offer hotel pickup/dropoff. "Hop on Hop Off" service just started on Kauai. "Poipu Shuttle" offers free transportation in Poipu area and other areas on Kauai. May be a little inconvenient but I think you will be able to get to most of the major sites/areas.

It appears multiple people from my wife's family will be going as well now. Gathering information from here and other places on things to do.
So far: Tubing in the mountains, Sailing the Na' Pali Coast. Driving in Waimea Canyon. Definitely going to do some hiking, so I'll be gathering information on where the best hikes are. Also, will take the recommendations in here on good restaurants. We're not the fine dining type, so will be looking for stuff with a more local feel. Always wanted to go to a luau, too.

Brennecke's Beach Broiler is definitely casual. In Kapaa the Oasis on the Beach is great local food with open air (minimum walls) on the beach, Duke's at the Marriott Beach Club near the airport is a chain but people love it. Keoke's Paradise is good casual. Avenue Cafe Breakfast). Kalapaki Joe's is a sports bar but has good breakfasts also. There are probably some places in town of Waimea and up by Princeville but we haven't been to any. There was a great casual place in "Old Koloa Town" but not sure it's still open. Old Koloa is only a few blocks long so it will be easy to find if it's still open. Good Ice cream place also in Old Koloa. HanaPepe is small town to the West of Poipu that is trying to become known for art but we didn't see much. The "loco moco" is a local favorite dish across Hawaii.
I have heard the Sheraton nearby has a Luau on the beach. May want to make reservations now. Might be able to check with the Marriott concierge to make reservations.

Just an FYI - sailing Napali in winter is dicey. The best point to leave from is hanalei in the North, as you get to see the most spectacular parts of the coast which are proximate to the North. But those boats don’t run in the winter. The ocean is quite violent in the winter.
I think some of the south companies might still run in the winter but you really spend most of the trip just getting around the horn to the south part of the coast which, while beautiful, isn't the same as the North half of the coast.
Just something to think about.

We liked Sushi Girl and Kileuea Fish Market for poke and fish up north. Porky's BBQ was good lunch spot, very laid back.
To be honest I don't remember anything standing out down near Popui area. There are nice resort restaurants and that outdoor shopping area has decent options I mentioned up thread aplenty. Not that they were bad just don't remember.
We ate at Beach House I'm pretty sure, remember it being an awesome setting, classic Hawaiian fancier place.

There's a thread on car rental issues. Friend just paid $2200 for 5 days on Maui for a van. He waited too long and tried to book a few weeks before 4th of July. Try Costco travel if you're a member. They had inventory that the car rental companies themselves didn't show. I looked at Turo but thought the prices were ridiculous. I booked my trip there in a few weeks and 2 weeks for my daughter's honeymoon in October on 2 islands

There's lots of lists covering the trails along the Waimea Canyon and info on the Kalalua trail for the Na Pali coast. One trail we did that was not highlighted much is Ho'opi'i Falls Trail. The start of the trail is in a beat up neighborhood near Kapaa, but the trail itself is great. 2 medium size waterfalls with swimming. Lots of variation in the forest for a relatively short hike (less than 2 miles each way). After doing that, the Wailua Falls overlook was a yawn from my kids.

15 sleeps til i go to Maui, ZOMG look at me. i’m hoping #1 work doesn’t stop me from the trip and #2 tourist types booze cruises stay open. full on unicorn trip since i have a friend living there so i have a free place to stay and free transportation and get military rate on the golf courses. worst joke i’ve ever heard was: soccer tied? we tied? mai tai… then they laughed. ugh, mai tai’s mean that i have to wake up and say “I’m sorry”

Good news on the car rental. Wife bought plane tickets yesterday through Southwest and they already went back down today, so she called and they refunded the difference. Lady at Southwest also found us a vehicle available for 5 of the 7 days we're there through budget, so we're set there. We can deal without a vehicle for a couple days.
