Yes. I did the cruise Wed and the captains say after October the boats are taken out of the water. So is it understood that a cruise around the Na Pali coast in December is a no go due to the rough seas? I'll go ahead and mark that one off if it is.
Yes book everything now. Luaus are particularly tough, it it’s everywhere up there.I’ll be on the Big Island Aug 20-29. Friends were just there. Said it’s a must to start booking restaurants 30 days out. Several resorts are only letting guests book at their restaurants. Staffing/capacity issues. In any event dinner spots were very hard to come by for my friends. Don’t know if the same for other Islands but would guess so
Mine was cancelled the morning of the sunset cruise in late December a few years ago. I drank local beer instead. So is it understood that a cruise around the Na Pali coast in December is a no go due to the rough seas? I'll go ahead and mark that one off if it is.
I did a boat / snorkel tour in January. Took off from the south side, stopped for snorkeling somewhere down there. We went around pretty far along the west side of island and wrapped around the north side for quite a bit IIRC.So is it understood that a cruise around the Na Pali coast in December is a no go due to the rough seas? I dunno. Once you've seen one luau would you ever go back?If you are staying at a hotel or resort call the concierge and they might be able to get you reservations, especially luaus. Condo's might have an "activity desk" where they usually get paid commissions and they will try to sell you "something".
nopeI dunno. Once you've seen one luau would you ever go back?
Exactly. Kalua pig and some bland fish in buffet trays. Iffy drinks. Fire show and hula. I guess maybe you have to do it one time as a first time tourist, but can't see anybody going back a second time.nope
No, but if you hadn't seen one and you want to see one and things are getting booked up, the hotels concierge/activity desk, will probably be your best best to find a ticket. I didn't mean luau's are a must see every visit.I dunno. Once you've seen one luau would you ever go back?
Agree, unless you still are trying to figure out poi.Exactly. Kalua pig and some bland fish in buffet trays. Iffy drinks. Fire show and hula. I guess maybe you have to do it one time as a first time tourist, but can't see anybody going back a second time.
We are going back to one tomorrow. My kids were young the last time and wanted to go.Exactly. Kalua pig and some bland fish in buffet trays. Iffy drinks. Fire show and hula. I guess maybe you have to do it one time as a first time tourist, but can't see anybody going back a second time.
That's great. Barely found 1 vehicle available for the week we're going in December, and it was crazy expensiveLeaving Friday. Reserved a car for 9 days 5 months ago. $1286. Checked today. $486. Cancelled and rebooked. Saved $800
This seems like very good advice. I can't imagine waiting to deal with this after a long flight knowing it could be avoided.CGRdrJoe said:landed in maui today, get pre screened if you can. i had to have saved at least an hour once i landed by already having my wristband. i’m hearing the tsa lines to leave are close to 3 hours long, i won’t know until saturday but i’m hoping the nextdoor posts are full of #### when they claim this.
reservations are a must, most are booking 4-6 months out. if you are a small party then sign up for opentable alerts where it lets you know if there are last minutes cancellations. sitting at the bar is also a option and usually doesn’t need a reservation. about to do a doors off helo tour in maui, will report back! This seems like very good advice. that’s where we flew today, it was amazing however i’ll never do another doors off helo flight again. i was on the outside back seat and the wind was so strong it was hard to get good pictures as i tried to balance and keep my goggles on.One other suggestion for those staying in Maui:
We were there pre-Covid and flew from Maui to Molakai for one night (very small prop plane). Molokai is slow paced and fairly undeveloped, in fact it looks like it's still in the 1970s.
But the flight there goes by the north cliffs which (per the pilot) are the highest sea cliffs in the world. And the view was absolutely spectacular. High volcanic cliffs, waterfalls, etc. Everyone on our flight was in awe.

Yeah, those helicopter tours crash with alarming frequency. Seems like every couple years a fatal one occurs. I have an air traffic controller friend who says she’d never step foot on a heli, knowing what she knows.that’s where we flew today, it was amazing however i’ll never do another doors off helo flight again. i was on the outside back seat and the wind was so strong it was hard to get good pictures as i tried to balance and keep my goggles on.
Years back when I was on Oahu with my wife, we were supposed to go on an early morning helo tour over the coastline. But I woke up with the weirdest feeling…I can’t really describe it, but it was a very uneasy feeling, almost like a sense of doom. I don’t get nervous flying, but this was a feeling I’ve never had before or since then. I ended up canceling the tour, and paying the $70 cancellation fee or whatever it was.Terminalxylem said:Yeah, those helicopter tours crash with alarming frequency. She also discouraged me from flying with another friend who recently got his pilot’s license, to see those sea cliffs on Molokai.![]()
If you get way down south near the green sand beach, I recommend a stop at Panalu’u Bake Shop. Touristy for sure, but oh so good.Big Island is great so far. Loving it.
Have you gone to Mauna Kea at night yet? Do they still bring out their telescopes at the Visitor Information Station at 10pm or is that kaput now with covid? It was one of the highlights of my trip to the Big Island a number of years ago.Big Island is great so far. Loving it.

Kingsland. Hilton Grand vacations club. Waikoloa. CondosWhere are you staying?
That sounds really cool. Can you do that from Kauai? Do you just fly into the airport and walk around or rent a car there? One other suggestion for those staying in Maui:

Nice, I stayed right there.Kingsland. Hilton Grand vacations club. Waikoloa. Condos
Kauai is much further away (out west, past Oahu) , so I don't know if that distance will work with a small plane. That sounds really cool. Can you do that from Kauai? Do you just fly into the airport and walk around or rent a car there?
Nice. Yeah we got locked out of Mauna Kea today as they only have 40 parking spots. So went to Hapuna again today after my round at Mauna Lani North (sweet 79). Went to Black Sand beach yesterday. Snorkeling is amazing. Going again tomorrow. Only need 30 minute or so. Been hitting home runs with restaurants as well - so far this is an amazing trip. Had mai tai's at Huggos on the rocks then went to Jackie Rey's Ohana Grill for dinner. Phenomenal mealwilked said:Nice, I stayed right there.
some advice is to go to the resort beaches like Mauna Lani early (ie by 9) before the lots fill. We liked that one (Black Sand) quite a bit, awesome snorkeling.
grand Hyatt in budget?I have some Delta companion passes that I am planning to use to book a flight to either Oahu or Maui (similar price) for my wife's birthday next June.
Looking for recommendations on a place to stay. My wife wants the resort experience this time after we did airbnb last time in Kauai. Nice pool, beach, poolside drinks, etc. Not looking to go crazy with the budget but doesn't have to be crazy cheap either.
Bonus pts if they have available child care for our 5 and 7 year olds for some occasional couples time.

on Maui, I have liked the pools at the Hyatt, Westin, Sheraton, and Marriott. That's in Kauai, right? We are looking either Oahu or Maui as we've done Kauai before (and flights are better into Oahu/Mauai). I updated my post to make that more clear.
But yes that's around the budget we were thinking.
2nd the Grand Hyatt on Maui. Great spot, near Lahaina, and has 2 killer pools. Walking distance to a bunch of great spots to eat too.I have some Delta companion passes that I am planning to use to book a flight to either Oahu or Maui (similar price) for my wife's birthday next June.

The adult pool at the Marriott Waliea is one of my favorite spots to spend a day. During the winter you can drink a cocktail, watch whales breach, dip in the pool. No screaming kids allowed. So great.on Maui, I have liked the pools at the Hyatt, Westin, Sheraton, and Marriott.
what part of the island?Looking into Maui June 2022. Thank you to everyone who posted advice in this thread. Open to any new or recent suggestions/advice. Me, wife and 2 daughters (will be 18 and 15).
what part of the island?
wailea is nicer, but windy. if you go kaanapali side, go further east. hotel or vrbo?Friend or 2 suggested Wailea but I am open..nothing booked yet.
My lean is hotel/resort due to the big pool type setup. Prolly a lot more expensive to go that route I'm learning.wailea is nicer, but windy. if you go kaanapali side, go further east. hotel or vrbo?
yep. my in-laws live in lahaina. we've gone to the pools at various hotels. they have hook ups, but i think you can pay to go to some of the pools. My lean is hotel/resort due to the big pool type setup. Prolly a lot more expensive to go that route I'm learning.
