Hawkwind has been described as trance/stoner/space rock, purveyors of face melting space rock and garage psychedelic space metal. The trance part is at times reminiscent of Can, especially the locked in robotic groove of the drums, they were reportedly the biggest influence on Monster Magnet for the stoner part, and they were riffing on space possibly before (or concurrently with?) bands like Yes and Rush.
Hawkwind - Space Ritual (LIVE full album, may be their masterpiece)
* This was cross-posted from the prog thread, but I wanted to break out into a separate thread, as imo they get lost in the shuffle between Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Genesis and the better known acts in the genre, and therefore could be ripe for rediscovery/critical reappraisal.
