Head Coach's - which side of the ball.. (1 Viewer)

Seeing all these coaching candidates floating around, for the most part they are either former/current offensive or defensive coordinators. It just got me to thinking in general which are more successful, OC's that become head coach's or DC's that become head coach's (or it could be neither). My quick impression is that generally defensive coordinators go on to become better head coach's thinking about the current NFL with Bellicheck, Parcells, Lewis, Del Rio, Dungy, Fox, etc.

Has anyone come across any articles or studies that breakdown success rates? What's the opinion of the pool, do DC's make better head coachs, OC's make better HC's or neither it just depends on the person?

Being a good head coach has nothing to do with which side of the ball you coached. It has to do with knowing how to communicate, how to motivate and how to delegate. It is a more of a management position than a technical position.

Um...Shanahan, Holmgren, Billick, Reid, and among the newer guys...Payton. :sleep:Among retired guys, Walsh did OK.For every D coordinator who succeeds, there's a Romeo Crennel who doesn't seem to get it done. For every O coordinator who succeeds, there's a Marty Morninweg(however you spell it) who fails. And some organizations are built to fail, no matter who they hire as HC.As mentioned above, the key is communication, motivation, organization, leadership, etc. It's a management position; you need to find good leaders. The x's and o's are much less important at that level.

Pretty much all of Cowher's coordinators have failed as head coaches on both sides of the ball:

**** LeBeau - DC

Dom Capers - DC

Chan Gailey - OC

Jim Haslett - DC

Mike Mularkey - OC

So far I would say Marvin Lewis has been pretty good for the Bengals but the jury is still out (he was a DC).
