Hearst Castle--Any Advice for Visitors? (1 Viewer)

My wife and I age going to be out in the Santa Cruz/Monterey area in late April and are thinking about driving down Rt 1 to Hearst Castle. Neither of us have ever been there. I see from the website that they have multiple tours of the Castle, but it is unclear if you have to go back to the base of the mountain between tours or if you can just go up there and then switch between tours.

Any Cali guys have any advice for getting the most out of seeing this place?

Don't recall exactly what you are talking about. But the tours are good. Expect to spend a few hours there. I love Santa Cruz--just strolling along downtown or the boardwalk is a great day too. Best sushi I have ever had at Shogun on Pacific. Not to be missed if you like it. 99 Bottles of Beer is also a cool establishment. And the Catalyst is great for live music and Streetlight Records is a good shop.

It's over two hours from where you'll be but the night tour is a step above the rest. The main rooms tour or something like that is the one to see if you can only do one during the day. Another features bedrooms and another features the kitchen and such other areas. If they have one emphasizing the art and architecture and you like that stuff then do that one, but they will all cover the art as they go.

Go to the Cambria Beer Company owned by a fellow FBG.

Check out the elephant seal rookery not far from the castle.

Eat at the Moonstone Beach Bar and Grill. Have the chowder.

Check the Caltrans road conditions site http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi for Hwy 1 travel reports before leaving Monterey. You never know when there's a mud slide/road construction/zombie attack in progress that could affect your trip.

Also, watch out for student protesters on the fishhook (Hwy 1/Hwy 17 interchange) in Santa Cruz. They had Hwy 1 closed for several hours last week.

It's a must do. I spent hours at it when I went. My tour was a short guided tour of the house and then you had unlimited time to roam the grounds and other buildings. Well unlimited as long as you caught the last bus down the hill.

I went with my girlfriend last year. Once you're up at the castle, you don't have to go back down between tours. You just schedule what times you want to do the tours, which you can do online or that day at the ticket counter. I think it's best to do there, as the lady at the counter was helpful. After doing one tour, you can hang around and then return to the top of the stairs where you came up when getting off the bus upon arriving at the house. You'll want to do this about 20 minutes after the scheduled time (because it takes them that long to get up the hill). There is a guide who hovers there around the top of the stairs, and he will advise you and help you get into the right tour when it arrives.

I did the main tour and the upstairs tour. The main tour was cool but it's really just like 3 large rooms -- a living room, dining room and movie theater where you watch a lil screening of the celebrity guests back in the castle's heyday. You see a ton of cool furniture and artwork from different historical eras that Hearst was able to buy from Europe at discount prices after WWI. I actually found the upstairs tour more interesting, going through his libraries, bedroom, guest bedrooms, and the bedroom of his mistress. It felt like a more substantial tour. The guide provided more details, there were only about 10 people on the tour so it was more personal and he answered questions, and you had a little more freedom and space to walk around and look at things.

For your time up at the house while not on tour, I think an hour is sufficient. You just want to take in the main pool with its Roman architecture and walk through the gardens. On the way to the bus as you're leaving, you'll go by the covered pool which is also very cool. There's also a free movie on Hearst history down at the welcome center that I think is best to watch when you first arrive, before going up to the house.

Rising tuition costs at UCSC. They chained themselves to barrels in the middle of the freeway. This has happened over the years several times. Crazy kids.

We have 4 full days on the coast before we have to get back to SF for a flight in May. We were planning on staying in Monterey the whole time and not making it to Hearst. Are we crazy for being that close and not going there? Just seems like it would take up a full day on its own and it's a lot of driving with our 8 month old.

With an 8 month old? Yeah, skip it.

Thanks, everyone, this is all very helpful.
You won't regret the trip to San Simeon. The weather is perfect this time of year and there's so much to see and do on the central coast. Happy trails.
Any winery tours you'd recommend? There appear to be a bunch of them in the Paso Robles area.
I did a day of wine tasting west of Paso early last summer. I was so impressed I spent a week there a month later. I could go tldr with nothing but high praise so yes. If you like wine country, culture, tasting then find time. If you can only fit in one do Tablas Creek.
