Neither did I. I always thought it was weirdly campy nihilistic and didn't dig on it, frankly. I never got the love for it.  

It seemed inhumane, though that was the point of both the protagonist and the antagonists, I guess.

totally agree. the nihilism felt forced, IMO. and the acting didn't help at all (slater doing his best jack nicholson impersonation and winona... well... winona.)

Loved the movie. Not gonna claim it's a cinematographic masterpiece, but dark and campy is an appealing combo to me, and it hit my entertainment preferences pretty squarely as a teen.
