Help putting together keeper list for large PPR keeper league (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

Here is the basic info: (scoring in my signature if you want to consider that too)

  • 14 team PPR keeper league
  • start QB, RB. WR, WR, [1 flex RB,WR or TE], TE, K, Off, Def.
  • roster = 2QB, 3RB, 4WR, 2TE, and the rest don't really matter ;)
  • Keeper points are assigned based on year and position drafted: 1rst & 2nd round is 10 points to keep next year, 3rd-4th round is 9 points for next year etc.
  • You can keep a player multiple years at a cost of 3 points per year. So 1st or 2nd round in 2016 is 10 points to keep in 2017, 13 points to keep in 2018, 16 points in 2019 etc.
  • Free agents picked up during the season are 5 point keepers for next season.
  • I'm picking near the end of the first round (1.12) then serpentine from there.
  • Keeper budget every year is 30 points or less with no exceptions.

Here are the players I am choosing from and point values:

  • QB Sam Bradford 5
  • QB R.Wilson 15
  • RB P. Perkins 5
  • RB K.Dixon 5
  • RB Giovanni Bernard 4
  • RB Booker (DEN) 1
  • WR Pryor 5
  • WR K.Benjamin 7
  • WR E.Sanders 10
  • WR S.Watkins 10
  • TE Gronk 16
  • TE V.McDonald 5
How would you put together a 30 point (or under) team? Most teams keep 3-5 players.

The biggest problem I'm having is whether or not to keep Gronk @16 points. Given the relatively slim pickings left at my late first round pick I'm concerned! I could keep Bradford, Perkins, Pryor and Booker for the same points....

Any/all opinions appreciated! I will do my best to answer yours as well!

-Craig

I would keep Gronk despite the cost.  If you take away the keeper points, would you trade Gronk for those players?  I wouldn't.  IMO you should go for quality first, so Gronk would be the first keeper.  I would probably go with Prior and Perkins as well, even though I don't love either of them, I still like them more than Watkins alone.  That would leave 4 points left so I guess I would keep Bernard too.

Perkins (5)
Benjamin (7)
Watkins (10)
Pryor (5)

I am just not a fan of Gronk's injury history and if you are keeping him you are banking on him not getting injured, which I think the odds are in favor of him spending some time on the sideline given his history.

IMO I'd rather have Watkins and and Benjamin than Gronk...

Keeping these 3 WRs gives you a pretty solid depth allowing you to focus on other positions in your draft

You being concerned about talent at the end of the 1st round concerns me... it's as if everyone keeps their studs every year... to me that seems kind of foolish. We have a league where you give up draft picks for your keepers (pick before they were drafted) and can keep up to 3 players a season. A single player can be on your roster 3 years (drafted, kept, kept). Guys would keep high quality players every year meanwhile I was keeping guys for my last 3 picks who had the most value. As a result I've placed each of the 4 years this league was in existence (won 3 times)

I do like your keeper rules however and may encourage my league commish to change the keeper rules.

Is it more valuable to have gronk or to keep 4 players be pretty deep at WR and have a decent second year RB? Do you value Watkins + Benjamin lower than Gronk? That's the question. Don't worry who everyone else is keeping, just keep the best value for your team. I am not a big fan of Gronk given his injury history. If it doesn't bother you, then I'd do what RC has suggested. If you are worried about it then you should consider keeping higher quantity. If Gronk > Benjamin and Watkins then yeah keep Gronk. I just think Watkins has some huge upside as does Benjamin. Both have WR1 talent

That's my thinking too right now....I don't think I'd trade Gronk for any combo of the rest of my team...

Is it more valuable to have gronk and some leftover garbage or to keep 4 players be pretty deep at WR and have a decent second year RB? That's the question. Your keeper rules are interesting!

If I was not keeping Gronk I was thinking Pryor/Perkins/Bradford/Watkins/Dixon. Then in first round I just take best available.

Bradford was the #7 QB in my league last year and I think he should come close to that again this year...pretty good for 5 point keeper.

Dixon IS suspended but I think I can get West or similar pretty cheap to hold me over.

Pryor and Perkins should be decent.

Watkins is a bit scary to me but I think he has the best upside vs E.Sanders or K.Benjamin.

I do like your list...hmmm...

Yeah you can always count on the AC to make things as clear as mud.

You are right: Bradford is a good value pick. I'm not sure how many rounds you have but I believe 5 points means he's equal to a 11th-12th round pick. Which is likely much lower than where he will go in your draft. So for that, yes I'd agree you're better off keeping him rather than Benjamin. Benjamin is a round 7-8 value, which is also lower than he should go in your draft. So that intrigues me...

Watkins has round 1-2 value. Do you think you can get him round 1? Your chances are probably better than Benjamin? Not sure how I feel about that TBH. That's a good question. At the same time, keeping Benjamin over Watkins doesn't really free up much cap space to keep anyone else. So maybe you're better off just keeping whichever WR you think will have a better season next year.

Dixon is worth the price

I think I could get Watkins in round 1 (11th pick) and almost definately get Benjamin if Watkins is gone. (Plus there's always 3-4 guys not kept I would have never guessed)

Thanks a ton for your insight!

Is there any penalty to keep more players?  Some of the suggestions above are leaving pts on the table (why not keep Booker for 1 pt?).  Without knowing how much of your league uses their points (are many 15+ pt guys kept?), it's hard to say exactly what might be available in the draft.  If most keep all their studs then I would probably keep Gronk at that price because he is a difference maker and none of the other guys are.  If there will be studs available then I would stock up on the lesser priced guys as your depth because you can get a stud or two early in the draft.

This is interesting league.  Many avenues you can go here.

I would keep Gronk, Perkins, Booker and Pryor for 27 points total.  I know Gronk is expensive, but I think you need to keep an elite player, and Gronk is one when healthy.  You have a chance of drafting Watkins or Benjamin with the 1.12 pick.  None of the other players are worth keeping IMO.

OP would have a lot more options if he had an earlier draft pick.  Having the 1.12 is a big deal and OP would be shut out of any elite players if he bypasses Gronk.  I know it's a risk, but I would hate to have OP in a spot where he's behind the 8 ball with no elite players (and his keepers wouldn't be that great).  I think he has to keep Gronk.
