Hernandez ruled out (1 Viewer)

With Hernandez out is Gronkowski now a top TE #1?

From Rotoworld:

Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez (hip) was downgraded to out for Week 16 at Buffalo.

With Hernandez not around to cannibalize Rob Gronkowski's production, Gronkowski suddenly becomes an intriguing Week 16 fantasy play since the Pats will carry just two tight ends. The last six weeks, Gronk has alternated one-catch games with five-catch games, with Week 15 netting just a 25-yard reception. Tom Brady has demonstrated his trust in the fourth-round rookie time and again this season to the tune of seven TDs.

Surprised more people aren't chiming in on this, since almost everyone would like a better TE than what's in their lineup. Now having to think about Gronkowski or Graham.

I thought the same. I have to decide between gronk and miller (oak). The thing is its really hard to rely on any patriot other than brady isnt it? A mostly healthy miller has a much higher floor than gronk methinks, other than his one 3td game, and miller might have a higher floor too. Hard to know if gronk goes for 5/72/3 again or 1/7. Theres really no way to know, if brady wants gronk to get 50/2 then he will, but they might go in a whole different direction. A guy like miller most likely gets the targets and the yards and maybe a td. Other guys in the same tier like graham, daniels, winslow, cooley, boss, etc seem to be almost more reliable. With hernandez out, how many 2 te sets will the pats run? They seem to absolutely love it so one would have to figure gronk would get a ton of snaps, 40-50 at least to my mind depending on how long the pats scoring drives are. How many targets does that translate to? Its a tough call and perhaps a gutsy one for championship matchups.

With the targets, gronk has been averaging 3 a game, hernandez 4.6. Is it a simple as adding those two for gronkowski today? Say 7-8 targets? Will he need to block much against the bills? The bills have absolutely no one who can cover him. Or do those targets go to guys like woodhead?

Dodds/Tremblay/Norton have Gronkowski at #81 among ppr wr/te. I could see him having a big day. Maybe the guys who are experts on NE can chime in. Will Gronkowski have to stay in to block all game or something?

With Gates out I need to decide between Gronk and Winslow. Gronk is normally a high risk - high reward but with Hernandez out I would like to think Gronk as more of a medium risk - high reward. I'm thinking Gronk is the play here.

Arg...Gates down as my #1, Hernandez down as my #2...have to choose between Delanie Walker, Zach Miller (JAX), and Fred Davis as my TE for the championship game...

Going with Walker at the moment... ;)

Remember that the Pats will still have Crumpler, who is a great blocking TE. That still allows the Pats to use Gronkowski as a receiver. You just might see more of Tate on the field where Hernandez often plays.

Crumps also a pretty good receiving TE. Does he get the looks in the passing game?

Not nearly as many. Since the Falcons got rid of him, Crumpler has become more of a blocker in the run game. He actually joked during his one-year tenure in Tennessee that he was an extra guard on the field. That's how the Pats use him and why they took him.

Also facing the Tamme v Gronk decision. Too make matters more difficult, opponent has Brady. Really tempted to roll Gronk.

After years of disappointment in Graham and Watson, the Pats finally have a couple of real weapons at the TE position with Gronk and Hernandez.

Funny... in Patriots lingo I figured Hernandez being out would somehow cause Brandon Tate to explode. Odd to see it work out the way that it's supposed to.
