Jene in your last edition of Reading the Defense, you commented about Herzlich taking quality snaps at MLB and looking like he could replace Greg Jones. The guy justs seems to make things happen in all facets of his life, so this is no surprise. With Goff back next year and Boley struggling with a hammy, do you see Herzlich as a long term solution or is he just filling a void for the injury plagued LB corps? Also, Jacquian Williams seems to always make plays when he gets the chance. How do the coaches not see that he is their best asset and get him more time? Does he make a lot of mistakes or what am I missing? Where do you see him fitting in the near future and could he ever play in the middle? Thanks Jene. I've read that Herzlich played pretty lousy in coverage and is unlikely to retain his spot. I think the plan is for Greg Jones to take over again.

Not much more to add than what was in the column.

Thought it very interesting that he got a look as an ILB, since his scouting reports didn't suggest that was a great fit. I thought he played reasonably well against the run and, while he struggled in coverage, I'm not ready to kill him for that against a matchup like PHI.

I haven't heard anything suggesting that Jones will get a shot in those packages again (though John's speculation isn't unreasonable).

We've known that the Giants' ILB spot has been a spot in flux for years. It's clear that the team isn't entirely comfortable with either Jones or Williams in any facet. Whether the Herzlich experiment continues, shows improvement or gets shelved quickly remains to be seen. I'm not advocating rostering Herzlich in any and all leagues, but the situation definitely deserves monitoring.
