Hey Fatties. Lose some weight. (1 Viewer)

If you're anything like me, and I know I am, you need to lose some weight. A friend on Facebook showed me this weight loss contest, and since this is a forum full of people that like to put money on stuff, I figured I'd share. Basically, you throw in $25 a month for six months, and if you can lose 10% of your starting weight by the end of it, you get your money back plus a share of all the money lost by the people who couldn't make the goal.

e.g. if 10 people join at $25 each and 8 make the goal, the 8 get their $25 plus an extra $6.25 ($50 from the two fails divided by 8). There is a cut to the site, of course, but they give you the breakdown for each contest.

The contest I'm in has 53 players so far, and it starts in two weeks. The current contest, which started today, has 2,943 players in it and a total pot of $392,300. I have no idea how many people typically make it to the end. But even if it's everyone, you get your money back and you've lost 10% of your body weight, so... win. (If you pay for the six months up front, you get a month free, which is why the total is less than 2,943 x $25).

I am in no way compensated for telling you guys about this, and if you don't join, I don't care :D But if you're trying to lose weight and you think this might be an interesting motivator or change of pace for you, check it out:

If you look at the census thread, most FBGs are pretty close to dying. There's really no reason to lose weight when they're just going to be dead soon anyway.

I'm to lazy to look.........how do they make sure everyone is honest?

And 10% seems like a lot

I agree, and I'm too lazy to look too. But if people really are throwing money into this thing, maybe the shark move is to cheat and make some dough.

If you weigh a buck fifty, 10% is a lot.

The idea is to get the 300 pound slob to turn into a 270 pound........slob.

You take two pictures at the beginning one of a full body shot and one of the scale with a random word they send you. Then at the end you take the same two pictures.

I did a bunch of these last year/ these are the percentages of winners

42.86% 1st diet bet

42.01% 2nd diet bet

47.59% 3rd diet bet

57.08% 4th diet bet

40.32% 5th diet bet

43.20% 6th diet bet

48.65% 7th diet bet

44.49% 8th diet bet

56.50% 9th diet bet

63.67% 10th diet bet

46.13% 11th diet bet

52.52% 12th diet bet

44.91% 13th diet bet

42.82% 14th diet bet

49.07% 15th diet bet

54.74% 16th diet bet

51.03% 17th diet bet

48.62% 18th diet bet

56.58% 19th diet bet

56.62% 20th diet bet

69.35% 21st diet bet

53.35% 22nd diet bet

whoops that is for just the monthly game not the 6 month game

They do all this service for just a token 25% of the pot.......what a deal! Most guys could look like they lost 10 percent just by sucking in their gut and faking a scale reading is pretty easy.

Actually, in this game the house would take $62.50 leaving $187.50 to be divided up by the 8 'winners'. Each 'winner' would collect $23.43 of their initial $25 investment.

No, the idea is to get someone down from 300 to 270, then for that person to do it again. So maybe he does it 3 times and gets down to 219. Would that not be a significant change over 18 months? 10% in six months isn't intense, but it gets the ball rolling - and you make it sound like if you can't go from slob to perfection in one shot then it's not worth doing. I disagree with that.

I clock in right now at 250. I can't suck in my gut and make it look like I've lost 25 pounds. But sure, with a little Photoshop I could. But we're talking about $25 and I'm trying to lose weight. What would be the point of faking it? There are better ROI's than this game and with less effort. There are human "referees" that scrutinize the pictures that get sent in looking for signs of fraud, and if they flag you, there's a whole process you have to go through to prove you're not cheating.

That's incorrect. They have a guarantee that you will make your money back at the very least. This is from the FAQ:

We guarantee that if you win your dietbet, you won't lose money. Most winners make money (1.5 to 2x on average) but in the event your game has an unusually high percentage of winners, we'll forfeit our cut in order to ensure that winners never lose their bet. (Worst-case scenario: you'll end up losing weight for free.) In DietBet 10 games, "winning" means reaching the 10% goal at the end of the 6-month game. Note: this guarantee does not apply to charity games where the host has designated some or all of the pot to benefit a charitable organization (these are clearly labeled as charity games).

I went from 323 last January to 212 november 1 doing them, so yes I agree with you.

This would be a good business model if they offered multiple buy in levels. 25 bucks doesn't motivate me, but losing 1000 might. Could have multiple pool sizes too (think Fanduel for Fatties)

And... Partnering up with gyms to run official weigh in days at the larger/national places. Would seem to be a win/win... Have the gym perform the weigh in and then have the opportunity to pitch the fattie on buying a gym membership. It's driving targeted business for doing very little work other than certifying weights

Well, you're reading way too much into what I posted. Of course it's worth doing.

I am also a believer that most people that need to lose weight won't do so until they are pi$$ed about it and embarrassed and angry. I think calling fat people slobs is helping them more than hurting them. Just my opinion.

they do have multiple buy in levels but you generally don't see to many people join anything over $50.
