High Fructose Corn Syrup...the antichrist (1 Viewer)

This vile ingredient is in everything. It's in your sodas, snacks, breads, everything that has a sweet taste to it basically has this crap in it. The people who grow it, sell it by the truckload to coke/pepsi and the like...the part that sucks is that it costs more to manufacture than sugar itself...and we can of course buy that sugar cheaper even from abroad but let's leave that alone for the moment. The farmers then turnaround because they can't make a profit on this stuff and get hand outs from the government  You thought the Airline and Oil Companies were ripping us off.

Not only does that stuff make you a fat tub of goo but it has long term cancer causing effects as well. And we end up paying for several times. 1st with the government handouts and then thru the rising costs of healthcare because of all the people that get long term terrible health due to a variety of problems but ultimately can be linked back to this product. Our parents drank Cokes back in the 30s and 40s and 50s...they weren't all tubs of goo.

Has anyone really looked into this problem? Do people think this is not that big of a problem and it will just work itself out and go away? Is anyone not aware how this HFCS crap is made and subsidized by the governement? Do you even care?

That pales compared to the conspiracy which exists to make us eat vegetables. Broccoli, zuchini, even spinach! These vile products are even pushed by our mothers, who have fallen for the Nazi Communist propaganda.

Give me meat. Rare meat with the juices dripping!

I care ...

Sugar >>> corn syrup. It's the reason I switched to homemade ice tea & coffee over soda pop. Not only that ,it tastes better too.

There's one person that gets it. Good for you Leroy.Do you have kids? Do you let them eat anything with HFCS in it? You even have to read for it in things like bread. This is one of the reasons you want to try and get away from the traditional grocery stores...most of the stuff they have East of the Milk Case and West of the fruits and vegetables...yeah all those aisles form 2-14, loaded with HFCS in just about every other box of goo you pick up.

That hippy-dippy health conscientious California lifestyle is getting into your head bro.

Eat what tastes good and F the rest. I got mine.

You are talking to a guy that was quietly working his way up to 300 lbs...I started January 16th of this year and cleared my entire kitchen of anything that had this crap in it...I don't even have a once in awhile coc cola anymore...if I want a coke I go to Whole Foods and get an organic soda that at least has pure cane sugar in it. I have dropped a lot of weight almost 50 lbs...we aren't even in June yet. Exercise of course too but this particular culprit has taken lives form people, the same as nicotine in cigarettes but society thinks this is OK to eat becasue they trust the FDA and their government...and since this board doesn't seem to trust the government on much else in this world why would you leave your health in their hands? I'm sure many of you don't, but some others need to seek out some info on all the crap that is going into your food. Like today, right now, before you eat that bagel.

Two brands I have seen with cane sugar are "Hanks" gourmet sodas and Jones sodas.

I agree. Very few govt subsidies regarding food products make sense

I love this but only in moderation.

But we are talking about one's health...what price do you put on being able to function when you are 50?

You are right it would probably be better to just get a 6 pack or two of the good cane sugar drinks, save them for supper only, and drink water any other time.

I eat a lot like a dog...meaning I eat a lot of the same stuff everyday. People throughout history have gotten way to used to having choices upon choices which has also contributed to and leads to fat tubs of goo.Breakfast: Kashi Cereal bar(Tons of choices), Kashi hot cereal, or Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal...we are looking for insoluable fiber here, as much as we can get early in the morning...I eat within 20 minutes of getting up...you must kickstart your metabloism, there is no debate about this.Snack: Fruit...whatever you like, I prefer organic apples.Lunch: Tuna Fish on 100% Whole Grain bread...Miltons is a safe choice, 5g of fiber per slice. We are trying to get fiber and as much of it as possible in every meal. Fiber carries fat out of your system quickly. It also takes more calories to burn fiber so it helps you lose weight as a by product.Snack: Fruit...possibly some turkey breast if I want a protein instead.Dinner: Chix/Fish, Vegetable/Salad, and Lentils...tons of fiber in lentils and they fill you up.Snack: More fruit...I am working out a fair amount so I might actually have a piece...A PIECE of dark choclate form a large bar that would last me a week or two. The key is to not blow your whole day after 7PM that night. I like the microwave popcorn too...organic of course. Kinda boring, but I had a lot of fun getting up to the weight I was, no plans on returning. Oh andI almost forgot...beer was replaced with red wine.Do I ever mess up and eat the wrong thing? You better believe it but when you exercise a lot...or at least walk 30-45 minutes a day if you can't make it into a gym...mighty good things happen to your body and you can live with eating a lot more stuff that isn't on a traditional plan. But its a lifestyle change, if you don't go in with that mindset than you can forget it.

Do you like Gatorade? Me too but it has HFCS in it so try this instead. Take a glass of OJ, fill it about 1/3 of the way and fill the rest of the glass up with cold water, add a cube or two of ice...you got Gatorade.

MOP.... you are so money and you dont even know it.

I agree 100%. I am close to 300#'s and after reading the AB's diet book looked into this HFCS thing. It is in friggin everything. I am trying to ween myself of off of it, but its in EVERYTHING.... Even though its twice as expensive, I am about to solely shop at Whole Foods to try and get a leg up on it.

I am seeing clients that are breaking down in their late 20s....

Evereyone thinks fat is what makes you fat but there are plenty of things I buy at Whole Foods that are not lowfat but they don't have all the other crap in them. People have a misconception that WHole Foods is expensive...it isn't cheap but the 365 Brand that they sell as the alternative to the name brands in just about everything...that 365 brand I have found ot be pretty good quality and honestly pretty cheap. I have found products there in the 365 brand that cost less than the regular brands that have HFCS in them at the regular grocery store...now why would someone pay more for worse food... :link: But it's America!

Agreed, HFCS is by far the worst thing in American diets right now. I try to eliminate it from my diet at all costs.

This is a must read if you're concerned about HFCS (which you should be). Since this article in Men's Health Magazine 2-3 years ago I've tried to avoid the HFCS whenever possible.

"The Devils Candy"

This should open your eyes the evils of HFCS.

Let me ask you guys a serious question- what propels one to spiral into a 300 # weight gain?
1. Marriage...I packed on a good 75 lbs after I got married...wife put on about 50-60 which she lost before I even got started losing mine. She was on Jenny Craig and I have gotten her off that crap and more on my plan but modified for her lifestyle a bit more. 2. You stop playing sports. We all played football, basketbal, baseball as kids. When is the last time you went out into the street and played touch football? C'mon now! You need a sport or you need to embrace the gym, yes weights will do wonders for your body and you do not need to lift a lot of weight(meaning the actual lbs) to do yourself a world of good. I lift weights about 3-4 times a week and for no more than about 45-60 minutes in conjuction with some treadmill work. My goal is to burn fat not get huge...working out your legs with weights burn an enormous amount of fat...I swear to you.3. You work hard all week, you owe it yourslef to come home and eat whatever you want...right? It's not alcohol so what's the harm? That's the mindset. Food becomes drugs for working people...and you can get these drugs all day long at lots of places in many forms and flavors.

Perhaps, but most likely people that work hard don't have time to make meals themselves so they get takeout or just put 3:00 into their microwave.

Also, how sure are you about the "sugar is cheaper" thing?

That's not what I recall from reading omnivore dillema..

Take out is fine...there is a hot food section at Whole Foods, you can load up to go. Take out or to go doesn't mean you have to grab the worst thing possible by going to McDonalds, Burger King, or wherever and getting a slab of fatty beef with mayonaise, and french fries, and a tall coca cola to wash it down into your guts...I'm just saying there are better choices.

US life expectancy at birth:

1900 48.2 years

1950 66.3

1970 67.9

1980 70.8

1990 72.7

2000 74.8

2004 75.7

Ahhh, the Chicken Little’s are always with us.

Also, how sure are you about the "sugar is cheaper" thing? That's not what I recall from reading omnivore dillema..
We can import sugar a helluva lot cheaper than it cost the crummy government to subsidize the HFCS industry that's for sure. But we don't want that because it puts farmers out of business...oh well so sad but I want to live and I want kids that are eating this stuff everyday to have it taken out of their diets. I saw a kid the other night pop out of 7-11 like he owned the place...couldn't have been more than 10-11 years old but he ahd a handful of crap and he had to weight 250+ lbs...I winced as he tried to hoist himself up into his mother's van...where was dad I wondered...how do you let your kid get that GD fat...I got big as an adult but I was skinny as a kid and my parents never let us drink sodas or munch down bags of chips after school. I got away from that upbringing but have rediscovered myself lately.

There's very little HFCS in most tuna salad. I've begun to bring cans of tuna to the movie theater to eat instead of candy or popcorn.

You know why that is right? Those little blue, pink and purple pills on the TV at night...they can prolong anything these days. My father lived with terminal cancer for 4 years...was diagnosed at 55 and lived to be 59, medicine kept him alive a lot longer than if he had gotten that in 1901 instead of 2001...you get my point I hope. The world and especially this country is almost baby proof...you know how many kids died before vaccines and the like were around like we have now.

Also, how sure are you about the "sugar is cheaper" thing? That's not what I recall from reading omnivore dillema..
I'm curious too. I thought HFCS was cheaper than sugar due to the farm subsidy for corn allowing farmers to sell it cheaper than they produce it.

proninja said:
Culdeus, do some googling - I've read that sugar is actually cheaper to produce than HFCS, the problem lies in the fact that sugar doesn't grow well in the southeastern US, and we can't produce it near as cheaply as they can in countries where it grows naturally.Obviously, the solution for this is for the government to tariff the hell out of any sugar from outside the country, pushed by the $$ from the sugar lobby. HFCS is chemically altered corn. It is poison, and I want to say that with as little hyperbole as possible. Problem is, it's in just about every processed food in the grocery stores. Crap. I'm standing in the protein bar section of the grocery store for a pre workout meal, and this #### is in almost all of them. I will find one without it.
100% correct Ninja...we cant produce it for as cheap as other countries can so we tariff the hell out of it so companies here in the United States turnaround and buy HFCS from the good ole farmers in this country. Everything you said is right on the money.

I see this in my church with people that have given up drinking and other addictions. They have turned around and have decided to just go absolutely over the top with eating everything and anything in sight.

Great point MOP about playing sports. As we grow older we give it up- career, age, marriage, liability and such. However- it is just alarming to see that type 2 diabetes in this country is out of hand and spiraling towards an epidemic. Children are eating very poor diets as their parents make poor decisions based on time constraints, budget concerns, ignorance and a general lack of caring. Children are not even getting decent exercise at all. Pick up games of football; tag, baseball, "it" and such are activities of the past. Without sound nutrition and a lack of exercise the march towards a lack of a healthy lifestyle ensues. When disease kicks in it is off to the Walgreens for the prescription curse.

Your exercise program is very sound but I urge you to seek a personal trainer that understands mechanics and forces (RTS) or (NASM) so you can really get the benefits of your efforts.

Here's what Wikipedia has to say about it - High Fructose Corn Syrup
If you just got rid of HFCS for your diet, even if you stil indulged...and believe me Whole Foods is loaded with goodies that can pack on weight, but you still are going to have better health because you are not eating HFCS...other countries are actually eating more in wieght of sugar according to the link you pointed out Wheel, but those countries do not ahve obesity like we do.Can't wait to see Michael Moore's new film, Sicko! Not sure if he uncovers anything in this sector, I know he hits the healthcare industry right between the eyes.

I see your point, but Gatorade just tastes so damn good and it does have electrolytes (maybe it's psychology after good marketing, but I just "feel" better after drinking it). If you work out and burn up all the calories you take in, what's the difference among the sources of the calories you consume?

Great advice, I work out with a man by the name of John Damon who owns This Gym. He has been featured in a lot of magazines and I think he has a real good understanding of weights...I have worked out with him probably 8-10 times to get a good routine for myself.

I try to avoid this as well, but I just can't find a substitute for ketchup. Any suggestions?
Avoiding it altogether is basically unpossible at this point. If ketchup is one of the few places you are getting it, you're in great shape. Just try to avoid processed foods as much as possible and use honey as a natural sweetener. Our government has created a major problem with the farming of corn. They'll fix it eventually, but as usual it will take 5 years longer than it needs to.

Awesome, another fatty lays into dieting and how there's a whole "elitist" conspiracy going on. I'm sure somehow it'll be Bush's fault and we should be able to sue McDonald's and other companies who produce foods high in fat and sugar. Burn more calories than you consume. Figure out those calories by reading labels. Figure out if you're fat by grabbing at any loose skin around your stomach. If pretty girls don't look at you, hit up a gym and quit eating so damn much - especially of the foods you ate to get the "loose skin." How anyone can "spiral" towards 300 bills boggles my mind.

I agree with a lot you have posted MOP. Also looking forward to Michael Moore's MovieAnd I am also waiting for the class action suit against the HFCS producers. It is coming

Sorry for the hijack, but I was reading the label of my spicy mustard bottle yesterday while grilling up some brats (yum) and it had NOTHING in it. No sugars, no fats, no calories, and like a tiny bit of sodium. Anyone know what is in mustard? I was surprised to see the label so bare.
