History repeats itself? Tate, Hardesty, etc.. (1 Viewer)

Seeing the many posts about these two in particular got me thinking. History has a way of repeating itself but going unnoticed until after the fact. I'm trying to come up with a player or players in this situation and see how that turned out to help predict the future for Tate and Hardesty.

I'm trying to remember some RBs that came out of nowhere (or close to it) but haven't thought of any yet. I would love to see a discussion go down this route. What do you guys think?

What does "came out of nowhere" mean?

Undrafted?Drafted in the late rounds? No history of either 100 attemtps or 400 yards in a season?Seems like that's kind of coming out of nowhere. HTH, Otis.

I guess I mean that the eventual starter (and producer) was not widely expected to do so due to existing vet presense and highly drafted rookie expected to take over.Foster was an afterthought before the preseason games and Hillis was a throwin in the Brady Quinn deal behind Harrison and Hardesty.

Huh?

By Tate and Hardesty do you mean Foster and Hillis?

Or do you mean two backs that were drafted high to be the starter only to lose their jobs to guys who "came out of nowhere?"

I must still be fuzzy from last night as I thought this was clear.

I'll try again because I think there could be some good discussion here.

Arian Foster and Peyton Hillis both are producing now at super high levels. Before they actually started playing games would you agree that this was unexpected to say the least (sort of like "out of nowhere"). Hillis had jerome Harrison who finished as a stud last year and had Hardesty (drafted in 2nd round) in front of him as well. Foster finished 2009 well but had Slayton and Tate. Tate and Hardesty were highly thought of and expected to lead their team's rushing attacks. Fast forward one year and we are wondering how this will look in 2011. Will the encumbants hold the job and still produce with minimal interferance from the rookies? Will they split evenly? Will the rookies take back the job they were drafted for?

I'm curious to find a "Hillis" or "Foster" from the past and see what happened the following year. My thought would be that some valuable insight might be gained.

I'd have to think about it a little more but here's a couple off the top of my head.

Gary Brown taking over for Lorenzo White for the 1993 Oilers.

Priest Holmes taking over for Errict Rhett of the 1999 Ravens.

However in neither case was the expected starter a rookie who never played.

Terry Allen? Twice? surprise 9th round pick did well for the Vikes. Tore his ACL, went to the Redskins and had a 21 TD season later in his career.

I think you need to rename the thread. It seems you're asking about Foster/Hillis, but the title strongly suggests that you're asking about Tate/Hardesty in particular.
