Hockey/Soccer Guys: .....Why an "offsides" rule? (1 Viewer)

Your statement that the breakaway is the most exciting part of either sport is probably why you don't like them.
ok ...I'll bite....besides fighting...please tell me some things in either sport that are more exciting.....

I admit I don't "appreciate" some of the smaller nuisances and great little things about the game, but please tell me some things that are more exciting than a breakaway so I can look for them next time and see what I'm missing....

How about a heads up next time that these were gonna be hockey videos?
 What did you expect them to be?
Could have been soccer vids for those of us who enjoy slapfights more than actual punches thrown.

There aren't any exciting soccer videos

You wanna increase scoring in hockey? Make the nets bigger. Goalies are probably on average much bigger than they were when the current net size was chosen. Not to mention the size of leg pads, blockers, trappers, shoulder pads and sweaters.

Soccer? not sure you could to the same. Maybe make the goalies wear really heavy shoes or at a minimum ban the Mickey Mouse gloves.

Making the nets bigger in soccer would probably lead to more scoring, but it would come in the form of more speculative long-range shots. The ball would be out of play a lot more and there'd be fewer great buildups to goals.

Some people might like that. Most soccer fans would not.

The need more ref distraction so players can get hit with folding chairs.

It's not necessarily the act of scoring that many soccer fans find so enticing, it's the build-up and circumstances of the goal. A breakaway is certainly an exciting play, and anyone who tells you that it isn't is lying, but there's much more to the game than that. But the beauty of the breakaway isn't necessarily the guy actually scoring the goal. It's the positioning and passing the leads to the goal. How about the timing on this pass?

The combination on a great team goal in soccer is far, far more exciting than a player on a breakaway.

A beautiful long-range goal in can be much more exciting than a breakaway.

now these are videos worth clicking.

Why don't they make football fields 20 yards long and eliminate first downs to rid us of all the mindlessly boring 3 and out drives?

I think soccer should implement an offside line.
The old NASL used to have a 35 yard line.

I don't think eliminating the offside rule would increase scoring. The game would look different, though. And, IMO, would probably not be as interesting tactically.

Does the OP also advocate eliminating offside in football?

If you don't appreciate that stuff then it's probably not the game for you.

I love hockey the way it is, but a couple suggestions I've heard to increase offense that make sense relate to the powerplays (which are another exciting time where players can really show their skill),

The suggested changes were:

1) The player must serve the full length of penalty, even if a goal is scored (like major penalties are treated now).

2) Icing is still called/enforced when a team is short handed/killing a penalty.

It might seem like these would make the final outcome too dependent on who gets the most opportunities (that was my initial reaction) but really teams only score once every 5/6 powerplays right now, so it would add some offense but not change things too drastically.

1) It used to be that way, but the Canadians were so dominant, that teams voted 5-1 after the 1955-56 season to change it. The previous season saw the Canadiens score 26% of all the league's power play goals.

On Nov 5th 1955 (Marty McFly) Montreal's Jean Beliveau scored 3 goals on 1 power play in 44 seconds.

Getting rid of offsides in soccer would be like the NFL reducing the number of downs allowed from 4 to 1.

In both cases, you'd end up with two teams punting the ball back and forth waiting for the other one to make a mistake.
isnt that what it basically is right now?

i didn't start this thread to slam on either sport...I'm actually Blues fan and loved going to the games when I lived MO....still watch NHL occasionally but it's not a staple of my viewing like NFL, etc....

what has been enlightning is some saying that eliminating offsides would actually make it more boring (more defensive) than it already is......

Have you ever watched girls HS 6-on-6 basketball? That's how I imagine soccer or hockey without offside rules.

In #2 would players still need to stay on the ice after an icing? If so, players will be dead tired and you're going too far.

I play both outdoor and indoor soccer, and grew up in a hockey family (I played, my brother played professionally). Indoor soccer is basically in a hockey rink with turf, and has no offsides rule.

The effect on the field is that the last defenders stay with the last forwards no matter how deep they are, which opens up a huge middle of the field. That middle is used for better buildup play. Some teams will hit the long ball, but fewer than you would think - mainly because it isn't as effective as building through the open middle of the field.

I don't see any real need for offsides in soccer or hockey.

Am I the only one that thinks eliminating the off-side rule in soccer would actually reduce scoring?
No. Most of the people in the thread think that. It would certainly reduce breakaways, which is why the original post was kind of insane. Breakaways don't happen when 3 guys are left back 25 yards from their own goal.
