Injury Roundup: Week 2

Monday, September 15, 2014

Week 2 of the NFL was not for the faint of heart as multiple players went down to an injury. I’m sure we all have our bad beats from today, but it’s why this game is fun, right? If we won all of the time it would get boring, right?. So let’s dive into the carnage.

Robert Griffin III suffered a dislocated ankle against the Jaguars in the first quarter. Expectations for how long he’ll be out have been all over the place, but the team is hoping he could return in 4 to 5 weeks. He still needs to have a MRI to see if surgery is needed and to get a more accurate timeline on his return. His backup Kirk Cousins was on target with a touchdown pass on his first play from scrimmage and went on to put together a great game in relief. If he were to keep those kinds of games up it would be hard to sit him when RGIII returns, but there’s a lot of football to play before we have to have that conversation.

Knowshon Moreno dislocated his elbow in Sunday's loss to Buffalo and also suffered a possible fracture. The injury appears to bad enough to keep him out 4 to 8 weeks, but hopefully that timetable will narrow with more information.Lamar Miller will be the no doubt starter going forward, with Damien Williams as the primary backup. Miller hasn’t been outstanding, but he’s serviceable and has seen 10 targets so far. Look for him to be able to piece together decent overall numbers in PPR leagues.

Jamaal Charles sprained his ankle in the first quarter against the Broncos and wasn’t able to return. Initial talk is that it is minor, but we just won’t know the extent until we hear more, but Knile Davis was excellent in relief and there’s a good chance they won’t rush their superstar back.

A.J. Green suffered a strained toe ligament, which is also called turf toe, against the Falcons on Sunday. The Bengals’ official website is predicting his return will come after their Week 4 bye. Green says he hopes to play Week 3, but with the Week 4 bye there’s a good chance they’ll give him that extra time for rest. Mohamed Sanu would see the biggest bump for the wide receivers while Giovanni Bernard will continue to see plenty of work in the passing game.

In yet another blow to Washington in their blowout win they lost wide receiver DeSean Jackson to a left shoulder injury. The initial diagnosis is a sprained AC joint. It’s a similar injury to what kept Jordan Cameron out of Sunday’s game and continues to be aggravated, so there is a chance this could keep him out some time. And if he does miss we should see a bump for Pierre Garcon and continued relevance of Niles Paul.

Ryan Mathews was carted off the field in the Chargers’ win over the Seahawks and the initial diagnosis is a MCL sprain with 2-4 weeks to heal. This is just their initial thoughts as reported by Adam Schefter, so we need to learn more after tests, but expect him to miss some time. Donald Brown will take over the early down work while Danny Woodhead continues his passing down and change of pace work.

Eric Decker left the game against Green Bay in the third quarter with a hamstring injury. He went to the sidelines and you could tell he was trying to stretch it out and he tried to continue playing, but eventually had to leave. We’ll see how severe it is later, but Decker was a big part of the offense that almost upset the Packers in Green Bay. If he can’t go don’t look for much fantasy promise from the other receivers.

Vernon Davis left Sunday night’s game with an ankle injury. With the lateness of this game we most likely won’t know more until Monday, but this has been a fantasy nightmare for many fake teams out there today. A good fantasy team could have easily started Robert Griffin, Ryan Mathews, Jamaal Charles, A.J. Green, DeSean Jackson, Eric Decker and now Davis.

Allen Hurns hurt his ankle in garbage time down by 31 to Washington. He was seen with crutches after the game and most likely will miss some time. Look for Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson to be the two starters if Cecil Shortscan’t get his hamstring right.

Marcedes Lewis was forced from the Washington game in the third quarter with a high-ankle sprain. He has had lingering injuries that have kept him out in the past so there is cause for concern that this may take a while to heal.

Roy Helu also left the game against the Jaguars in the fourth quarter with a left knee injury. The game was in hand at the time and we have yet to see any reports on the severity. Silas Reed is the third string back if Helu happens to have a serious injury.

Tavon Austin left the Buccaneers’ game in the second quarter with a knee injury and didn’t return. There’s little information at this point, but the fact he didn’t return is somewhat worrisome. If he’s out for a while Stedman Baileyshould see a bump.

Other Injury Notes:

Rod Streater suffered a hip flexor injury in the Raiders’ loss to the Texans. . . . Cornerback Walter Thurmond IIIsustained a strained pectoral in the Giants loss to the Cardinals. . . . Cornerback Nevin Lawson dislocated his ankle against Carolina and needed immediate surgery, which means he is likely done for the year. This is another blow to an already weak secondary that lost Bill Bently to a torn ACL in Week 1. . . . Charles Tillman was forced from Sunday night’s game with a triceps injury and the Bears free safety Chris Conte also had to leave with a shoulder injury. . . . Bucs' middle linebacker Mason Foster was forced from the game against St. Louis with a shoulder injury and Gerald McCoy, the Bucs best defensive player, suffered a broken hand. . . . Strong safety Eric Berry has been diagnosed with a sprained ankle. . . . Giants middle linebacker Jon Beason was in a walking boot after aggravating his toe injury that has been a problem for months now. He will get an MRI, but I’m guessing he will be sat down to try to get it right.
